Chapter 10 - The Perimeter Breach

The brilliant white light pinned Julian, Beatrice, and Elena in the center of the hangar floor like insects under a microscope. Heavy combat boots crunched rapidly against the gravel outside as tactical units swarmed the perimeter, their amplified voices booming through megaphones, ordering everyone inside to drop their weapons and step away from the aircraft.

Julian didn't panic. He didn't run. Instead, he simply stopped in his tracks, casting a single, sharp glance toward the side entrance where the heavy steel doors were being violently kicked open.

"Federal marshals! Nobody move!" a commanding voice roared over the din as heavily armed agents poured into the hangar, rifles raised and sweeping the room.

Elena blinked against the blinding glare, shielding her eyes with one hand. She looked toward the lead marshal advancing through the tactical team, expecting to see the same federal agent from the rooftop. But the man stepping forward wore the insignia of a senior bureau director, and his expression was grim, carrying an aura of authority that made even Julian’s posture stiffen.

"Julian Vance, Beatrice Alden," the director called out, his voice echoing off the corrugated iron walls. "You are both under arrest for conspiracy to obstruct federal asset recovery and interstate financial tampering."

"There's been a mistake," Elena shouted, stepping in front of Julian instinctively, shielding him with her body despite the betrayal she had just uncovered. "This isn't what it looks like! The money was a legal settlement!"

"Step aside, Mrs. Vance," the director ordered sternly, motioning for two agents to flank him. "Your father's estate wasn't just settling old debts. The funds moved through those offshore accounts yesterday didn't originate from corporate restitution. They were funneled directly from an active federal counter-terrorism slush fund."

Julian’s eyes widened slightly—the first genuine flash of shock Elena had ever seen on his face. He stepped past Elena, holding his wrists out toward the advancing agents, but his voice was tight with disbelief.

"That's impossible," Julian said sharply. "I audited every single routing number myself. The source code was clean."

"The source code was altered forty-eight hours ago," a cold, smooth voice echoed from the darkness near the back of the tactical line.

A familiar figure stepped out from behind the heavy shielding of a tactical vehicle. It was Marcus, Julian’s chief financial officer and best man at the wedding, wearing an immaculate grey suit that looked entirely out of place in the dusty hangar. Marcus wasn't wearing handcuffs; instead, he was holding a secure tablet, smiling calmly as he watched Julian process the betrayal.
