Chapter 6 - The Digital Trap

The small black flash drive landed with a dull, heavy clack on the damp concrete floor of the parking garage, right at the tip of Lauren’s white designer shoe. Arthur moved instantly, kicking the device away with the toe of his polished oxford shoe before his bodyguards could even react, his hand instinctively reaching inside his jacket for his encrypted satellite phone.

"Don't touch it, Lauren," Arthur ordered sharply, his voice carrying the iron authority of a man who had survived decades of corporate warfare. "That device is likely loaded with a localized proximity worm designed to strip our private network clean the moment it pings."

Lauren kept her eyes fixed on the heavy metal fire door that Victoria had just vanished through. The heavy click of the latch echoing in the stairwell felt like a countdown timer. She slowly pulled her phone out of her pocket again, ignoring her father’s warning as the screen suddenly lit up with a massive push notification from the company's internal server. It wasn't an email this time; it was a high-priority system override alert.

"Dad... look at your phone," Lauren whispered, her voice trembling slightly as she held her own device up for him to see.

Arthur pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, his expression turning to stone as he tapped the glowing screen. The corporate network interface displayed a massive, red-flagged data transfer in progress—not outward toward an unknown server, but inward, bypassing every single firewall and security protocol that Sterling Global Holdings possessed. The source IP address wasn't coming from Geneva, and it wasn't coming from Victoria’s laptop. It was routing directly from the executive boardroom on the sixty-fifth floor of the very building they were standing beneath.

"She didn't come down here to gloat," Arthur realized aloud, the color draining from his face as the trap snapped shut around them. "She used us as a distraction to get physical access to the main server terminal."

Before Arthur could issue a command to his security detail, the overhead lights in the entire subterranean parking garage flickered violently twice and then went completely black. Total, suffocating darkness enveloped the space, broken only by the dim, pulsing red emergency lights striping the concrete pillars. The heavy steel security shutters at the garage exit slammed down into the floor with a deafening crash, sealing the subterranean level off from the outside world entirely.

"Code black! Secure the principal!" the lead bodyguard barked, his voice sharp and urgent as he drew a heavy sidearm and pulled Lauren and Arthur back against the armored side of the town car.

Lauren clutched her stomach instinctively, pressing her back against the cool metal of the vehicle as her heart hammered violently against her ribs. In the dim red glow of the emergency lights, the shadows seemed to stretch and twist.

"They locked us in," Lauren whispered, the terrifying realization washing over her. "We’re trapped in the basement with no signal and no way out."

Arthur didn't panic. His jaw was set in a hard, unyielding line as he tapped the emergency override button on his satellite phone, only to watch the screen flash a bright, mocking error code: Access Denied – Root Authority Revoked.

"Victoria didn't just hack the firewall," Arthur muttered through gritted teeth, his eyes scanning the dark corners of the garage where the shadows met the concrete pillars. "She managed to usurp the master cryptographic key from the board of directors while we were upstairs dealing with Julian."

A slow, distorted sound echoed through the garage’s concrete acoustics—the heavy, rhythmic scraping of leather shoes moving methodically through the shadows near the utility elevators. It wasn't Victoria walking alone. There were multiple sets of footsteps, slow and deliberate, closing in on their position with calculated precision.

"Mr. Sterling," a synthesized, electronically altered voice crackled suddenly through the garage’s overhead public address intercom system, sending a chilling echo bouncing off the walls. "Your empire was built on stolen land and broken promises. Time to hand over the keys before the foundation completely collapses."

Lauren’s breath caught in her throat as a flashlight beam cut sharply through the red darkness, sweeping across the concrete floor and stopping dead on the black flash drive still lying a few feet away from her feet.
