Chapter 10 - The Fire Alarm

The piercing shriek of the emergency fire alarm drowned out any further conversation, filling the penthouse with a relentless, disorienting noise that made concentration nearly impossible. Heavy strobe lights began to flash rapidly from the recessed ceiling fixtures, painting the white walls and modern furniture in stark, rhythmic pulses of crimson light. Hayes immediately grabbed Lauren by the arm, pulling her back from the open safe as a thick plume of grey smoke began to billow out from the main ventilation duct in the hallway.
"We have to get out of here now!" Hayes shouted over the deafening alarm, his face tense with urgency as he scanned the exits. "They’ve triggered the thermal suppression system; the entire floor is about to be flooded with inert fire-suppressant gas!"
Eleanor didn't panic. She calmly reached into her Chanel briefcase, pulled out a small, heavy-duty emergency respirator mask, and slipped it securely over her face before speaking through the muffled filter.
"The stairs are blocked by automated fire doors," Eleanor shouted, her voice cutting through the noise. "The only way out is through the private rooftop helipad. But Marcus has already locked the landing gear controls."
Lauren clutched the master ledger and the photograph tightly to her chest, her mind racing despite the smoke stinging her eyes. She looked at Eleanor, refusing to be treated like a helpless pawn in their family war any longer.
"If the helipad is locked, how do we get off this floor?" Lauren demanded, pulling a silk handkerchief from her dress pocket and pressing it against her mouth and nose.
Eleanor pointed toward the master bedroom suite at the far end of the penthouse, where the floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a direct view of the soaring downtown skyline through the sheets of pouring rain.
"The window-washing gantry," Eleanor yelled above the roar of the alarm. "It’s a manual override system. If you can reach the control box on the outer balcony before the gas seals the room, you can lower the maintenance platform down to the street level!"
Hayes didn't hesitate. He drew his sidearm again, using the butt of the heavy pistol to shatter the reinforced glass door leading out onto the private wraparound balcony. A torrent of wind and freezing rain instantly whipped into the penthouse, carrying the scent of ozone and burning electrical circuits.
"Go! Move!" Hayes ordered, pushing Lauren forward toward the shattered glass opening.
Lauren stepped out onto the slick, rain-drenched metal balcony, the freezing wind instantly catching her white off-the-shoulder dress and whipping the fabric wildly around her legs. The city below was a blur of neon lights and blurred streaks of red taillights shining through the heavy downpour. She gripped the cold metal railing with both hands, navigating the narrow platform until she reached the small, weather-sealed utility box housing the gantry controls.
She popped the metal latch, exposing a complex array of manual levers and emergency override switches. But as her fingers hovered over the primary winch lever, the screen on the control box flickered to life, displaying a flashing digital lock prompt requiring a six-digit authorization code.
Enter Root Override Code:
Lauren cursed under her breath, realizing that Marcus had anticipated this exact escape route as well. She looked back through the shattered doorway, where Hayes and Eleanor were struggling to hold the heavy interior fire door closed against the rushing tide of thick, white suppression gas that was rapidly filling the living room.
"Lauren! Did you find the override?" Hayes shouted, coughing violently as the first tendrils of gas leaked out onto the balcony.
"It needs a six-digit code!" Lauren yelled back over the howling wind, her fingers trembling against the cold plastic keypad. "I don't know the combination!"
Suddenly, her phone buzzed in her pocket with a sharp, insistent vibration. She pulled it out with one hand, shielding the screen from the pelting rain. A new text message had arrived from an unknown local relay, containing a single sequence of numbers: 10-28-98.
Lauren stared at the digits, her breath catching in her throat. October 28, 1998—the exact date her biological mother, Helena, had been legally institutionalized by Arthur Sterling.
Without wasting another second, Lauren punched the six numbers into the gantry control pad: 102898.
