Chapter 2 - The Inheritance Clause

Arthur Sterling, Lauren’s father and the ruthless patriarch of Sterling Global Holdings, did not raise his voice when he spoke, which made his quiet anger infinitely more terrifying. He stood beneath the modern crystal chandelier, his silver hair catching the sharp light as he closed the distance between himself and Julian. The men in black suits flanking the doorways did not move, acting as silent sentinels locking the penthouse down completely. Julian’s face drained of what little color it had left, his Adam’s apple bobbing nervously as the manila folder hovered inches from his face.

"Arthur, please, let's not make a scene in front of the caterers," Julian managed to choke out, taking a panicked half-step backward until the back of his legs hit the edge of a glass coffee table.

Arthur ignored him completely, turning his piercing gaze toward Clara, who had instinctively loosened her grip on Julian’s arm just a fraction. Arthur’s lips curled into a humorless smile that didn't reach his eyes.

"You look very comfortable in gold, Ms. Vance," Arthur said smoothly, the silkiness of his tone carrying a razor-sharp edge. "Too bad it’s going to cost you everything you own."

Clara’s smug expression faltered for a fraction of a second before she quickly recovered, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder with an artificial laugh.

"Mr. Sterling, you can't just bully your way through this. Julian and I are adults, and love doesn't care about your corporate contracts or your archaic rules," Clara retorted, though her eyes darted nervously toward the bodyguards blocking the elevator doors.

Lauren remained seated on the velvet sofa where she had collapsed minutes earlier, her hands resting protectively over her swollen belly. She watched her father dismantle the two people who had conspired to ruin her life with the cold efficiency of a surgeon. She didn't feel pity; she only felt a hollow, burning desire to see how deep the rabbit hole of their deception went.

"Love?" Arthur scoffed, letting out a sharp, dry laugh that echoed off the high ceilings. "You call embezzling company funds and staging a hostile takeover of my daughter’s life 'love'?"

Julian gasped, his hands flying up as if to ward off a physical blow.

"That’s a lie! Arthur, you can't prove—"

"Quiet, boy," Arthur barked, his voice cracking like a whip across the silent room.

Arthur finally flipped open the manila folder, sliding a single sheet of heavy cream paper across the glass table. The document bore Julian’s distinct signature at the bottom, dated just three days prior. It was a prenuptial agreement, but not the one Julian had shown Lauren. This version stipulated that upon marriage, Julian would legally acquire thirty percent of Sterling subsidiary assets—assets that Arthur had secretly transferred under a contingency trust tied explicitly to Lauren’s marital status and fidelity.

"You signed away your integrity for thirty percent of a company you thought you were about to inherit by default," Arthur whispered, stepping closer until he was towering directly over Julian. "But look at clause fourteen, section B, Julian. Read it out loud for everyone to hear."

Julian stared down at the paper, his hands trembling so violently that the single sheet fluttered against the glass. He didn't read it. Instead, he swallowed hard, sweat beading heavily along his hairline as his breathing turned shallow and rapid.

"I... I don't remember this clause being in the draft," Julian whispered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the penthouse air conditioning.

May you like

"Of course you don't," Arthur said softly, his eyes flashing with dark triumph. "Because you were too busy looking at Clara's bank accounts to read the fine print of your own destruction."
