Chapter 5 - The Unknown Senders

The private elevator descended smoothly through the forty stories of the high-rise, the gentle hum of the cable system providing a stark contrast to the emotional chaos they had just left behind. Lauren stared down at the screen of her phone, the bright light casting a cool blue glow across her pale, composed face. Her thumb hovered over the notification banner, her pulse quickening as she reread the text message twice to ensure her eyes weren't playing tricks on her.
“The police took the bait on the shell company, Lauren, but the real mastermind is still sitting in the boardroom on the sixty-fifth floor. Don't leave the building.”
There was no name attached to the sender, only a secure burner ID routing through an encrypted proxy server based out of Zurich. Lauren frowned, her mind racing as she tried to calculate every possible variable. If Julian and Clara were just the outward-facing pawns, who had actually orchestrated the multi-million-dollar theft of Sterling Global Holdings’ offshore assets?
"What is it, sweetheart?" Arthur asked, noticing the sudden tension in her posture as the elevator slowed to a smooth stop in the private subterranean parking garage.
Lauren quickly locked her phone screen, slipping the device back into the pocket of her white dress before looking up at her father with a carefully masked expression.
"Nothing, Dad. Just a spam alert from the bank regarding the account freeze," Lauren lied smoothly, hating the deception, but knowing her father’s protective instincts would instantly trigger a full-scale tactical lockdown if he knew someone was still pulling strings from the shadows.
Arthur nodded, appearing satisfied as the elevator doors slid open to reveal his armored black town car waiting right by the private exit bay, flanked by two more suit-clad security operatives holding oversized black umbrellas. The afternoon rain had started to fall outside, slicking the concrete with a dark, reflective sheen.
As they walked across the garage toward the vehicle, the doors of an adjacent utility elevator suddenly slid open with a sharp mechanical ping. A tall, impeccably dressed woman in a charcoal-grey Chanel pantsuit stepped out, holding a sleek leather briefcase. She stopped dead in her tracks upon seeing Arthur and Lauren, her sharp green eyes locking onto Lauren’s face with an expression that was far too calculated to be accidental.
"Mr. Sterling! What a surprise to see you down here in the basement instead of upstairs celebrating the wedding," Victoria Vance—Clara’s estranged older sister and the senior vice president of global compliance at Sterling Global—said smoothly, stepping forward with a polite, razor-sharp smile.
Arthur halted immediately, his hand resting protectively on the small of Lauren’s back. His eyes narrowed instantly as he surveyed Victoria from head to toe, the older man’s intuition flaring up like a warning beacon.
"Victoria. I thought you were in Geneva attending the international trade summit," Arthur said, his tone flat and devoid of any social warmth. "What are you doing back in the city on a Saturday afternoon?"
Victoria adjusted the strap of her briefcase over her shoulder, her smile never reaching her cold eyes. She glanced past Arthur toward the open doors of the town car before shifting her gaze directly to Lauren, a subtle, triumphant smirk playing at the corner of her lips.
"Oh, family emergencies tend to bring people home early, Mr. Sterling," Victoria replied smoothly, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Besides, I wanted to personally ensure that the transition of assets goes smoothly now that Julian’s little plan has officially imploded."
Lauren felt a cold shiver run down her spine. The anonymous text message on her phone flashed in her memory with terrifying clarity. Victoria wasn't just Clara’s sister; she was the head of global compliance—the exact department that had ultimate sign-off authority over the offshore accounts Julian had supposedly embezzled from.
"You didn't just know about their scheme, did you?" Lauren said, her voice cutting through the damp garage air like a knife as she stepped out from behind her father’s protective shadow. "You wrote the code for the shell company yourself."
Victoria tilted her head, her smile widening into something truly predatory as she reached into her Chanel jacket, pulled out a small flash drive, and tossed it casually through the air toward Lauren’s feet.

"Check your email, little sister," Victoria whispered softly, turning on her heel and heading toward the stairwell doors. "The real wedding gift is about to drop."
