Chapter 3 - The Hidden Ledger

The silence in the penthouse grew so dense that the hum of the refrigerator in the adjacent open-plan kitchen sounded like a roaring engine. Clara’s grip on Julian’s arm finally slipped away entirely, her manicured fingers curling into tight fists at her sides as she realized the golden future she had mapped out was rapidly dissolving into ash. She took a sharp step forward, her eyes narrowing as she glared directly at Arthur.
"You set this trap," Clara hissed, her composure finally cracking at the edges. "You knew about Julian and me all along, didn't you? You played us."
Arthur didn't even dignify her with a direct glance, keeping his stern eyes locked entirely on the shivering man before him.
"Played you?" Arthur repeated, his voice dangerously low. "Ms. Vance, I simply gave a drowning man enough rope to hang himself, and he gladly tied the knot around his own neck."
Julian looked frantically between Arthur and Clara, his face pale and slick with sweat. He grabbed the edges of the table, his knuckles turning stark white.
"Arthur, listen to me, we can fix this. Lauren and I, we have a history—we’re having a child together! You can't just ruin everything over a misunderstanding!" Julian pleaded, his voice cracking with desperate self-preservation as he tried to bridge the physical gap between himself and the older man.
Lauren slowly rose from the sofa, her movements deliberate and controlled. The white off-the-shoulder dress brushed softly against the marble floor as she walked over to stand beside her father. She looked down at the man she had planned to marry just an hour ago, feeling a profound sense of detachment. The stranger standing before her in the white shirt bore no resemblance to the warm, attentive partner she had spent the last three years building a home with.
"A history, Julian?" Lauren spoke up for the first time in minutes, her voice clear, steady, and devoid of tears. "Is that what you call living in my father’s guesthouse rent-free while siphoning funds from my personal design accounts to pay for Clara’s downtown apartment lease?"
Julian froze. His mouth opened slightly, but no sound came out. The color completely drained from his face, leaving a sickly grey pallor. He darted a panicked look toward Clara, who suddenly looked away, her jaw tightening as she realized her own financial secrets had just been dragged out into the open air.
"How... how could you possibly know about that?" Julian whispered, horrified.
Lauren reached into the pocket of her dress and pulled out a sleek silver tablet, tapping the screen once before resting it gently on the coffee table right on top of the incriminating prenuptial agreement. The screen displayed a meticulously detailed financial audit, cross-referenced with bank transfers, lease agreements, and encrypted text message exports between Julian and Clara dating back over eight months.
"Because my father’s forensic accountants don't miss a single decimal point, Julian," Lauren said softly, leaning down slightly so he had no choice, but to look directly into her unblinking eyes. "I knew about the apartment lease before we even sent out the wedding invitations."
Clara stepped forward, her face flushing with sudden, blind rage as she pointed a trembling finger directly at Lauren.
"You manipulative little bitch! You sat there and played the sweet, naive pregnant fool while you watched us walk right into your trap?" Clara screamed, dropping her polished facade entirely as the mask of polite society shattered into a million pieces.
Before Clara could lunge forward, two of the large men in black suits stepped smoothly into her path, blocking her with impassioned, immovable professionalism. Clara slammed her hands against the broad chest of the nearest bodyguard, panting heavily as sheer, unadulterated panic took over her system.

Arthur slowly reached down, picking up the tablet from the table and tucking it securely inside the inner pocket of his black suit jacket. He smoothed the lapel of his jacket with slow, deliberate precision before looking past Clara and Julian toward the open elevator doors, where a second group of men was just stepping out, carrying heavy, standardized cardboard boxes bearing the logo of the city police department’s financial crimes division.
