Chapter 14 - The Final Lock

The iron key slid into the ancient, rusted padlock with a heavy, metallic scrape. Clara gripped the shackle with both hands and turned it. With a loud, echoing snap that seemed to banish the lingering shadows of the underground room, the lock fell open, clattering loudly against the concrete floor.

Beatrice slowly pushed the heavy iron gate open, stepping out of the darkness and into the golden light of the cellar for the first time in three long years. She looked frail, her skin nearly translucent, but as she stood upright beside Clara, there was a fierce, unbroken spark of survival burning deep within her dark eyes.

"Where is my son?" Beatrice demanded, her voice gaining strength with every second.

"He's upstairs," Clara said gently, placing a reassuring hand on Beatrice’s shoulder. "He’s safe. He’s the one who gave me the key."

Before Beatrice could reply, a low, groaning sound echoed from the floor behind them. Julian stirred, his eyes fluttering open as he groaned in pain, clutching his bruised shoulder with one hand. He rolled over, blinking against the light, and froze when he saw the two women standing side by side over him.

"Beatrice..." Julian whispered, his voice cracking like dry wood. He tried to push himself up, but his legs refused to cooperate. "How... how are you out?"

"Your son let us out, Julian," Clara said, stepping forward to stand between the fallen man and the woman he had tried to erase from the world. She raised the heavy iron poker slightly, not out of malice, but out of absolute, unyielding defense. "The game is over. The police are already on their way."

Julian stared up at them, his face twisting into a bitter, defeated sneer. "You think the police will care about a dead man's estate? My family bought this town a century ago, Clara. You’re just a temporary bride in a house of ghosts. You’ll never escape this place."

May you like

"I don't need to escape it," Clara replied, her voice steady and clear as the distant wail of police sirens began to echo faintly through the coastal fog outside. "I’m going to burn it to the ground."
