Chapter 1 - The First Thread of Doubt

Clara stood at the edge of the grand banquet hall, her chest heaving beneath the heavy white lace of her wedding gown. Her fingers trembled as she dabbed at the corners of her eyes, a delicate mix of joy and an unnamed, suffocating dread pulling at her heart. Across the carpeted floor, little Leo—her new stepson, barely two years old—stood holding a single white tissue pulled from a dark wooden table, offering it up to her with an innocent, unblinking stare. The guests murmured in the warm amber light of the chandelier, clapping softly, but Clara could not hear their applause. Her gaze was locked not on the boy, but on the man kneeling beside him: her new husband, Julian, whose face had gone completely pale.
"Julian," Clara whispered, her voice tight, cutting through the celebratory hum like a shard of glass. "Why does he look at me like that? Why did you never tell me what happened to his real mother?"
Julian stood up slowly, brushing invisible dust from his tan trousers, his jaw locked hard.
"Not now, Clara," Julian muttered, his eyes darting toward the crowd of smiling relatives who suspected nothing. "We agreed we would leave the past outside these doors. Take the tissue from the boy and smile for the camera."
"Don't you dare tell me to smile!" Clara snapped, her voice rising just enough to draw sideways glances from the nearest table. "The boy just handed me a tissue at our wedding, Julian. It’s not just a cute toddler moment. He looked at me with terror in his eyes. What are you hiding in this house?"
"I am hiding nothing," Julian hissed, grabbing her wrist with a grip that was entirely too tight. "You wanted this life, Clara. You wanted the house, the name, the family. Now act like it."

Before Clara could jerk her hand away, Leo dropped the tissue onto the floor, pointed a tiny finger directly at the ornate wooden double doors of the banquet hall, and uttered a single, chilling word that froze the blood in Clara’s veins.
