Chapter 13 - The Descent into Madness

Clara spun around just as Julian reached the midpoint of the concrete staircase. The iron fireplace poker caught the dim subterranean light, gleaming with a menacing, dull gray sheen. There was no time to think, no time to negotiate or appeal to the man she had called her husband less than an hour ago.

With a sudden surge of adrenaline, Clara kicked out hard with the heel of her satin wedding shoe, striking the wooden handrail directly beside Julian’s leading foot. The aged oak snapped with a sharp crack, throwing Julian off balance. He let out a startled yell, dropping the iron poker as he tumbled sideways, rolling down the remaining concrete steps in a tangled heap of black tuxedo fabric and bruised limbs.

He hit the stone floor at the bottom with a heavy, sickening thud, lying entirely motionless in the dust just a few feet away from the iron gate of the cell.

Clara stood at the top of the stairs, her chest heaving, her white lace wedding gown torn at the shoulder where she had brushed against the rough concrete wall. She looked down at Julian’s limp body, then over at the woman trapped behind the bars, who was watching the scene with wide, terrified eyes.

"Is he... is he dead?" Beatrice whispered from inside the cell, her voice shaking violently.

"I don't know," Clara replied, her hands trembling as she descended the remaining steps with agonizing caution. She picked up the heavy iron poker Julian had dropped, keeping her distance from his unmoving form. She knelt down beside him, pressing two shaking fingers against the side of his neck. A faint, steady pulse beat against her fingertips. He was unconscious, but alive.

"He locked you down here," Clara said, looking across the small expanse of stone floor toward the iron cell door. "For three years."

"He said the world thought I was dead," Beatrice answered, pulling the tattered woolen blanket tighter around her frail shoulders. "He said if I ever tried to escape, he would take Leo away and make sure my family never found a trace of us. But the boy... the boy knew. Even locked away down here, I could hear him walking on the floors above. He was looking for me."

Clara slowly stood up, turning her gaze toward the heavy ring of keys still clutched in Julian’s limp, unresponsive hand. She reached down, pried the cold metal ring from his fingers, and walked steadily toward the cell door.
