Chapter 11 - The Underground Cellar

The small silver key gleamed under the harsh fluorescent lights as little Leo held it up with both hands, his expression completely blank. Clara stared at the child, a cold sweat breaking out across her forehead. The woman in the wet lace gown had vanished into thin air the exact second the doors swung open, leaving behind only a puddle of dark saltwater on the carpeted floor.
Julian collapsed against the wall, his legs finally giving out beneath him. He slid down until he was sitting on the floor, staring blankly at his empty revolver as if it held the answers to the universe.
"Julian," Clara said, her voice shaking as she got unsteadily to her feet. She looked from her trembling husband to the toddler waiting patiently by the cellar door. "What is in that cellar? What did you put down there?"
Julian didn't look up. He let out a dry, humorless chuckle that sounded more like a sob. "Everything. The records, the money, the truth about the estate. My father built this house on stolen land and buried the previous owners beneath the foundation. I just... I just followed his blueprints."
Clara felt a wave of nausea wash over her. The man she had married wasn't just a murderer; he was the latest executioner in a multi-generational legacy of blood and deceit. She looked down at her left hand, where the heavy diamond wedding ring caught the sterile light. It felt like a shackle, burning hot against her skin.
"Get up," Clara commanded, her voice hardening with a sudden, icy resolve that surprised even herself. She walked over to little Leo, gently taking the small silver key from his tiny, cold hands. The boy looked up at her, and for a fleeting second, his eyes softened into something resembling innocent gratitude.
"You can't go down there, Clara," Julian muttered, looking up with bloodshot, pleading eyes. "There are things down there that will destroy you. They’ll destroy both of us."
"We’re already destroyed, Julian," Clara replied coldly, walking past him toward the heavy iron-reinforced door of the underground cellar. "The only question left is whether we burn with the house or face what’s waiting in the dark."

She inserted the silver key into the heavy brass lock. It turned with a satisfying, echoing click that seemed to shake the very foundations of the coastal estate, and as the heavy door swung open, a blinding beam of golden light shot upward from the depths, accompanied by the sound of muffled voices calling out for help.
