Chapter 8

Panic surged through Clara’s veins, hot and sharp, threatening to paralyze her limbs just as it had on the lawn. Beside her, Sarah went completely rigid, her eyes darting frantically toward the heavy velvet drapes that framed the tall Gothic windows overlooking the dark estate gardens.
"Hide the folder!" Sarah hissed, her voice a desperate rasp as the brass handle completed its rotation and the door began to swing inward.
Without thinking, Clara scooped up the thick manila folder and shoved it deep into the mahogany kneehole of the desk, pulling the rolling chair back to block it from view. She grabbed a blank sheet of paper and a fountain pen, forcing her breathing to slow down, channeling every ounce of icy composure she had inherited from the very man who sought to destroy her.
Julian pushed the door open, stepping into the dim library with his blazer slung over one shoulder, his floral shirt unbuttoned at the top collar to reveal a thin gold chain. A lazy, predatory smirk played across his features as he took in Clara sitting alone under the amber lamp, looking pale but remarkably composed.
"Burning the midnight oil, are we?" Julian asked, his footsteps silent on the thick Persian rug as he closed the distance between them. He glanced down at the blank paper on the desk, his smirk widening. "Smart girl. Realizing resistance is futile is the first step toward maturity. Arthur is waiting in his study with the notary. Sign your name on the dotted line, and we can all go back to pretending this is a respectable family."
Clara kept her hands resting flat on the mahogany surface, fingers curled slightly to conceal the tremor in her knuckles. She looked up at Julian with a steady, unflinching gaze that wiped the condescending amusement right off his face. "You're awfully confident for a man who is currently laundering money for an offshore syndicate, Julian."
The smirk vanished instantly. Julian’s body went taut, his eyes narrowing into cold, hard slits as he leaned over the desk, invading her personal space. The scent of cheap cologne and sweat washed over her. "What did you say?" he murmured, his voice dropping an octave into a menacing growl.
"I said," Clara replied, her voice steady and clear, echoing softly in the cavernous room, "your house of cards is about to collapse. And you won't even have a brick to stop it."
Before Julian could react to the veiled threat, a heavy cough echoed from the doorway. Arthur stood there in his silk dressing gown, his silver hair neatly brushed, watching them with an expression of supreme, chilling authority.

"Julian," Arthur commanded smoothly, stepping into the room. "Leave us. A father needs a private word with his daughter before she signs her birthright away."
