Chapter 7

Sarah dropped the manila folder onto the mahogany desk with a dull smack that startled the dust motes dancing in the lamplight. The thick cardboard casing bulged with printed bank statements, notarized wire transfers, and confidential audit logs bearing the unmistakable seal of federal regulatory bodies. Clara stared at the documents, her hands trembling as she reached out to untie the red cotton string holding the secrets of the Blackwood empire captive.
"Why are you bringing this to me now, Sarah?" Clara asked, her voice barely a breath above a whisper, though the gravity of the question hung heavy in the midnight air of the library. "You've protected my father's illicit operations for over a decade. What changed?"
Sarah pulled out a heavy leather armchair and sank into it, looking older and far more fatigued than her years suggested. The silver hair framing her face was slightly disheveled, and her hands were locked tightly in her lap. "I watched you grow up in this house, Clara. I watched you ride ponies on that very lawn where Julian tried to crack your skull this morning. I thought we were simply protecting a family business from hostile market forces. But when I overheard Arthur and Julian discussing the sanatorium papers... discussing locking you away permanently just to clear the title deed... I realized there is no family left here. Only a monster."
Clara felt a cold knot twist in her stomach. The realization that her confinement had been premeditated down to the institutional commitment papers made the physical pain in her body pale in comparison. Her father hadn't just been willing to sacrifice her leverage; he had been prepared to erase her breathing, living existence to ensure absolute control over the corporate portfolio.
"Julian isn't just an associate," Clara murmured, connecting the final dots scattered across Sarah's financial printouts. "He's the ultimate beneficiary. If the merger goes through under the emergency clause, Julian's shell company absorbs the entire holding structure. My father is essentially handing his life's work over to a criminal syndicate in exchange for a liquid payout to flee the country."
Sarah nodded grimly, reaching across the desk to tap a specific ledger page highlighted in bright yellow ink. "Federal investigators are already sniffing around the overseas accounts. If you hand these files to the authorities at dawn, the corporate restructuring halts instantly. The emergency clause becomes void because the crisis was self-manufactured fraud."
A sudden, sharp rap at the library door shattered the tense atmosphere.

"Clara?" Julian’s muffled voice called out from the dark hallway, accompanied by the slow, deliberate turn of the brass door handle. "Open up. Your father wants his signature on the transfer papers before breakfast."
