Chapter 13

The heavy oak doors of the foyer remained wide open, welcoming the cool autumn breeze that carried the scent of changing leaves rather than morning dew and panic. Clara sat before the ornate, gilded vanity in her private suite upstairs, staring at her reflection in the crystal-clear glass. The physical traces of the attack were fading into pale yellowish bruises along her jawline and collarbone, but the woman looking back from the mirror was entirely transformed. The fragile, sheltered heiress who had cowered on the lawn was gone, replaced by someone forged in fire and absolute clarity.
A soft knock interrupted the quiet, and Elena stepped into the room, holding a small leather travel case. The emerald satin dress from the day before was gone, replaced by practical travel attire, signaling that her departure, though influenced by the raid, was permanent and absolute.
"The federal prosecutors contacted my legal team an hour ago," Elena said quietly, leaning against the doorframe. "They confirmed that my personal assets are untangled from Arthur's offshore accounts. I'm catching a flight to Zurich by afternoon."
Clara turned on the vanity stool, looking at the woman who had once stood as her father’s fiancé, sharing the bitter reality of his betrayal. "I'm sorry for how he used you, Elena. None of us knew the full extent of his web until the vault files were opened."
Elena offered a faint, melancholy smile, walking further into the room and resting her hand briefly on Clara’s shoulder. "We were all just pieces on his board, Clara. The difference is, you found a way to flip the table before he could checkmate us." She paused, her dark eyes softening. "What are you going to do with the company?"
"We restructure," Clara said without hesitation. "Every shady asset is being liquidated to pay back the subsidiaries he defrauded. The Blackwood name won't be a synonym for corporate crime anymore. It’s going to take years, but it will be clean."
Elena nodded slowly, turning toward the door with her travel case in hand. "Then I wish you strength, Clara. You're going to need it to run an empire all by yourself."
"I'm not alone," Clara replied, looking down at the heavy pearl necklace resting against her collarbone. "Sarah is staying, and for the first time in my life, I actually trust my own instincts."

As Elena’s footsteps faded down the hallway for the last time, Clara stood up and walked to the tall French windows, looking down at the manicured garden below where the struggle had begun. The grass had already been mowed, leaving no physical scar to mark the violence that had changed everything.
