Chapter 10

The gold nib of the fountain pen hovered just millimeters above the blank parchment. The ink was dark and heavy, ready to seal either her imprisonment or her destruction. Arthur stood over her, a triumphant, predatory gleam in his gray eyes, fully convinced that his psychological warfare had broken her final line of defense. In the dim corner, Sarah held her breath, her eyes wide with desperate prayer as she waited to see if the Blackwood empire would claim another victim.
Clara pressed the tip of the pen down, but instead of writing her name on the transfer agreement, she drew a single, thick, jagged line straight through the signature block, tearing the paper in half.
Arthur’s smile vanished instantly. His face hardened into a mask of pure fury. "You foolish, ungrateful little girl," he hissed, reaching out to grab her wrist, but Clara was already moving.
With a burst of sudden strength, she slammed the mahogany desk drawer open, revealing the thick manila folder stuffed with Sarah’s federal audit logs and wire transfer proofs. Before Arthur could restrain her, Clara hurled the entire contents of the folder across the desk, scattering incriminating bank statements and federal subpoenas directly across his chest and onto the floor.
"The game is over, Dad," Clara said, her voice ringing clear and steady through the grand library. "Federal marshals were notified an hour ago. The wire proofs are already in the hands of the SEC."
At that exact moment, a chorus of sharp, synchronized shouts echoed from outside the estate gates, followed by the blinding sweep of heavy-duty halogen headlights cutting through the Gothic windows. The low, rumbling idle of multiple heavy SUVs vibrated through the floorboards of the mansion. Sirens began to wail in the distance, rapidly growing louder as they turned up the grand paved driveway.
Julian burst back into the library, his face drained of all color, panic rewriting his features entirely. "Arthur! The gates are breached! Federal agents—they're surrounding the entire estate!"
Arthur looked down at the scattered papers lying at his feet, then slowly raised his gaze to meet Clara’s unflinching eyes. The titan of industry had finally crumbled, his impenetrable armor pierced by the very daughter he had tried to discard.

"You calculated every risk, Dad," Clara whispered, standing up slowly as heavy boots began to thunder against the marble steps of the grand foyer below. "Except one: I learned how to fight from the best."
