The Paper Trail of Blood

At 2:00 AM, Alexander sat in the hospital conference room surrounded by his chief financial auditor, Thomas Vance (his eldest cousin), and two senior forensic investigators from a private legal firm.

Spread across the twenty-foot mahogany table were the unredacted bank records of the Vance Family Custodial Trust.

"It’s catastrophic, Alexander," Thomas said, tossing a thick binder onto the blotter. "Richard didn't just siphon the monthly child support. He forged your digital signature on a full power-of-attorney waiver eighteen months ago."

"What did he take?" Alexander demanded, his eyes bloodshot and hollow.

"Everything earmarked for Emma and Sophia," Thomas explained, pointing to line-item transfers. "Six hundred and forty thousand dollars in direct support payments. The deed to the four-bedroom Oakridge property—which he rented out to third-party tenants for six thousand a month, pocketing the cash through a shell corporation. And last November, he used the trust’s collateral to secure a four-million-dollar private loan for his speculative real estate project in the marina district."

"And the marina project failed," Alexander stated flatly.

"Completely," Thomas nodded. "The lenders were threatening to foreclose on his personal assets this week. That’s why he had Sophia at the gala tonight. He was attempting to pitch a secondary bridge loan to the banquet investors, using the trust's remaining residual assets as a guarantee."

"He starved my daughter to pay for a failed yacht club," Alexander whispered, the realization settling into his chest like liquid nitrogen.

The door opened. The head of hospital security stepped in. "Mr. Vance. Richard Vance has just arrived at the main hospital lobby with two private attorneys. He’s demanding access to his niece, claiming custodial guardianship."

Alexander stood up, straightening his cuffs. "Let him come up."
