The Awakening of Emma

Three days later, the heavy sedation was gradually lifted from Emma’s IV drip.

Alexander sat beside her bed in the ICU, watching the steady green lines of the cardiac monitor. The room was warm, filled with the soft scent of fresh eucalyptus and white lilies.

Emma’s eyelashes twitched. She let out a long, soft breath, her hazel eyes opening slowly, blinking against the gentle afternoon light.

She didn't see the dark concrete ceiling of the cellar. She saw white acoustic tiles, warm wooden paneling, and Alexander sitting beside her, his face lined with profound exhaustion and humble devotion.

"Alexander..." she breathed, her voice raspy from the oxygen cannula.

Alexander immediately stood up, pouring a small cup of water and holding the straw to her dry lips. "Slowly, Emma. Take small sips."

Emma drank, her eyes darting around the room with rising panic. "Sophia... where is—"

"She’s in the adjoining suite, sound asleep," Alexander said quickly, gently resting his hand over hers. "She is safe. She is fed. She gained two pounds this week, Emma. She is completely safe."

Emma closed her eyes, tears spilling down her pale cheeks, leaving tracks of clean, unburdened relief. "You know... you know everything?"

"I know," Alexander said, his voice thick with sorrow. "Richard has been arrested. He is being held without bail on grand larceny, child endangerment, and fraud charges. His trial begins next month. But more importantly... I know that I failed you both."
