The Confession of a Father*

Emma looked at him, seeing the sharp change in the man she had once known. The cold, unapproachable corporate titan who had placed quarterly earnings above family dinners was gone. In his place sat a broken, humbled man whose priorities had been violently stripped down to the only thing that truly mattered.
"You didn't know, Alexander," Emma whispered softly. "Richard was very thorough. He made sure we were completely invisible."
"That is no excuse, Emma," Alexander replied, looking down at her fragile hand resting in his. "I allowed money to replace presence. I believed that writing checks was the same thing as being a father and a protector. I was so consumed with conquering the world that I didn't even notice the foundation of my own home had been stolen."
Emma looked out the window at the blue autumn sky. "When you're trapped in the dark for three years, Alexander, you forget what the sun feels like. You start to believe that cold bread and moldy walls are all you deserve."
"You deserve the world, Emma," Alexander said, his voice steady with solemn commitment. "I am stepping down as Chief Executive of Vance Global tomorrow. Thomas is taking over the firm. I’ve liquidated my voting shares and placed seventy percent of the capital into a permanent municipal foundation dedicated to eradicating substandard housing and child poverty in the lower canal district."
