The Cold Cellar

Before taking Sophia to the private clinic, Alexander needed to see it with his own eyes. He needed the truth burned into his retinas so he could never, for a single second of his life, forget the cost of his own blindness.

Following the faint directions Sophia whispered from the backseat of his armored sedan, the driver navigated away from the gleaming downtown towers and into the decaying industrial fringe of the lower canal district.

The car stopped outside a dilapidated, red-brick commercial building with a flickering neon sign: Gable’s 24-Hour Coin Laundry.

Alexander carried Sophia down a flight of cracked, external concrete steps leading to the cellar entrance. The air grew damp and freezing, heavy with the stench of stagnant wastewater and toxic mildew.

He pushed open a rotting wooden door secured only by a rusty latch.

The room was less than ten feet square. A single bare bulb hung from a frayed yellow cord. Water dripped rhythmically from an exposed ceiling pipe onto a stained concrete floor. In the corner, resting directly on a wooden shipping pallet covered by two threadbare wool blankets, lay Emma.

She looked like a ghost of the vibrant, brilliant landscape architect he had fallen in love with ten years ago. Her cheekbones were sharp as razors, her skin gray and translucent, her lips cracked. She was shivering violently, clutching her stomach, her breathing shallow and wheezing.

"Emma..." Alexander’s voice was barely a breath.

Emma’s eyelids fluttered open. She squinted against the dim light, seeing the tall silhouette in the doorway. Terror flashed across her sunken features.

"Richard..." she gasped, coughing weakly into a rag. "Please... I didn't tell anyone... I swear I didn't ask for more. Just don't take Sophia away..."
