Chapter 9 - Echoes Beneath the Suburbs

The air inside the utility tunnel grew steadily warmer and heavier with every step they took, carrying a distinct mechanical hum that vibrated faintly through the soles of their shoes. The concrete walls were lined with thick bundles of fiber-optic cables and copper power lines, all converging toward a central junction somewhere deep beneath the residential district. Clara kept her hand locked tightly around Leo’s small, warm fingers, ensuring the boy stayed sandwiched securely between her and Officer Vance, whose flashlight beam cut an unwavering white path through the gloom.
"How far does this thing go?" Leo whispered, his voice sounding small and hollow in the confined concrete tube.
"Just keep moving forward, buddy," Vance replied over his shoulder, his tone reassuring despite the grim set of his jaw. "We're following the main service line. That means it has to connect back to the municipal grid infrastructure near the county courthouse."
As they rounded a sharp ninety-degree bend in the tunnel, the concrete walls abruptly gave way to a reinforced steel bulkhead door standing slightly ajar. A warm, yellow glow spilled out from the gap, accompanied by the steady, rhythmic clicking of dozens of computer hard drives working at maximum capacity.
Vance raised a hand, signaling Clara and Leo to halt. He crept forward silently, pressing his back against the cool steel plating of the bulkhead, and peered through the narrow crack into the room beyond.
Clara held her breath, straining her ears to catch any sound of Arthur or his co-conspirators. The steady hum of high-end server racks filled the space, masking any ordinary conversation, but the flickering light of multiple computer monitors painted the interior walls in shifting shades of green and blue.
"Is he in there?" Clara whispered softly, leaning in close to Vance’s shoulder.
Vance slowly pushed the heavy steel door open wider, revealing a massive, subterranean server room that spanned the footprint of an entire city block. Rows upon rows of towering black server racks stretched into the distance, cooling fans roaring like a jet engine at takeoff. But the room was completely empty of human life.
Instead, a single oversized monitor at the far end of the chamber was displaying a live video feed of the suburban neighborhood directly above them—showing their own house, the police cruiser parked in the driveway, and several other unmarked federal vehicles arriving quietly at the curb.
"Federal agents," Vance muttered, lowering his flashlight as he stepped fully into the server room. "They must have finally traced the signal disruption from the county dispatch office."
Leo stared up at the massive bank of monitors, his eyes wide with awe and confusion as he recognized the streets he rode his skateboard down every single afternoon. "That's our street... but why are there so many cars?"
Before Vance could answer, the oversized monitor in the center of the room flickered violently. The live video feed cut out instantly, replaced by a stark, flashing text prompt written in bold red lettering: TERMINAL PROTOCOL INITIATED. PURGE SEQUENCE ACTIVE.
A synthesized, metallic voice echoed suddenly from the overhead intercom speakers throughout the entire subterranean facility, repeating a chilling automated countdown.

"Ten minutes to total network collapse," the mechanical voice declared smoothly. "All structural access points are now permanently sealed. Have a pleasant afternoon."
