Chapter 10 - The Federal Trap

The synthesized voice faded into the steady, deafening roar of the server cooling fans, leaving an oppressive weight hanging heavy in the subterranean chamber. Clara rushed to the nearest computer terminal, her eyes scanning the complex lines of scrolling code and system diagnostics flashing across the screen.

"There has to be a manual override," Clara said, her fingers hovering over the mechanical keyboard as she tried to recall the basic command line entries from her old office administration days. "If Arthur launched the purge sequence from here, there must be a local terminal linked directly to the municipal emergency bypass."

"Don't touch the keyboard, Clara," Vance warned sharply, grabbing her arm and pulling her back just as a small indicator light on the terminal flashed a warning yellow. "These systems are rigged with biometric traps. One wrong keystroke could wipe out the entire municipal database permanently—or trigger a secondary lockdown."

Leo stood near the edge of the server rack, his young eyes darting across the forest of blinking green and red indicator lights. He pointed toward a thick bundle of yellow fiber-optic cables running along the base of the wall directly beneath the main monitoring station.

"Hey... that cable looks different," Leo said, his voice cutting through the mechanical drone of the room.

Vance knelt beside the boy, shining his flashlight beam onto the cluster of wires. Unlike the heavy industrial cables wrapped in thick black rubber, this particular bundle was encased in bright orange plastic and tied off with a familiar blue zip-tie—the exact same brand of zip-tie Mr. Henderson kept in his gardening shed on Elm Street.

"It's a secondary routing line," Vance realized, pulling a small pocketknife from his belt to carefully slice open the outer plastic casing. Inside lay a single, delicate glass fiber strand connected to a portable flash drive plugged directly into the main trunk line. "He wasn't just downloading data from the county archives. He was uploading an encrypted payload directly into the federal intelligence database."

Clara stared at the flashing screen overhead, where the countdown timer had dropped to seven minutes and thirty seconds. "That's why the federal agents arrived upstairs so quickly. They didn't just trace a power outage—they tracked a classified data breach originating from this exact coordinate."

"Which means," Vance added grimly, standing up and scanning the perimeter of the server room, "the agents surrounding our house upstairs aren't here to rescue us. They think we're the ones operating the terminal."

The reality of their situation hit Clara like a physical blow. To the federal authorities operating above ground, she and her ten-year-old son were not innocent victims trapped in a madman's game; they were primary suspects in a coordinated domestic terror attack against the municipal infrastructure.

Before she could process the terrifying implications, a heavy metallic clang echoed from the far end of the utility tunnel behind them, followed by the distinct sound of combat boots hitting the concrete floor.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons and step away from the terminal with your hands visible!" a harsh, amplified voice commanded through the gloom of the corridor.

Vance immediately raised both hands high in the air, stepping deliberately in front of Clara and Leo to shield them from the dark tunnel entrance. "Hold your fire! I'm Officer Marcus Vance, badge number four-zero-eight-two! We are hostages, repeat, we are hostages!"

A powerful tactical flashlight beam blinded them instantly, followed by the cold, metallic click of multiple assault rifles being unslung and aimed directly at their chest height from the shadows of the utility tunnel.
