Chapter 3 - The Empty House on Elm Street

The afternoon shadows lengthened across the neighborhood, stretching long and skeletal across the pavement as Clara and Leo walked down the sidewalk, flanked by Officer Vance and his partner. Clara kept her hand firmly wrapped around Leo’s small, warm fingers, though the boy kept trying to pull away out of sheer embarrassment. The tan button-down shirt she wore felt suffocating in the cooling air, but she couldn't bring herself to care about the weather. They stopped in front of Mr. Henderson’s house—a modest, single-story dwelling with peeling white paint and overgrown hedges that contrasted sharply with the meticulously manicured lawn Leo had supposedly ruined.
Crime scene tape fluttered lazily in the slight breeze across the porch steps. Another patrol car was parked in the driveway, its doors open and a forensic technician carrying a silver metal case toward the front entrance.
"Stay close to me," Clara whispered down to Leo, her voice tight with tension.
Officer Vance held up the yellow tape, allowing them to pass under it. As they stepped onto the porch, Clara noticed the front door was slightly warped, the wood around the deadbolt splintered inward as if someone had forced entry from the outside days before the police were ever called. Inside, the house smelled heavily of stale pipe tobacco, old paper, and something metallic and sharp, like ozone or burnt wire.
"We want you to look around, kid," Vance said, turning to Leo once they stood in the cluttered living room. "Tell us if you ever came inside this house while you were working for him."
Leo swallowed hard, his eyes scanning the towering stacks of newspapers, regional maps pinned to corkboards, and old filing cabinets that lined the walls. He shook his head slowly.
"No. Mr. Henderson always paid me on the porch," Leo said honestly. "He told me the inside was full of asbestos and he didn't want me breathing it in."
"He lied," the female officer spoke up for the first time, her voice cool and crisp as she pointed toward a partially open basement door at the end of the hall. "The air down there isn't full of asbestos. It's full of photographic developer and fresh ink."

Clara took a step backward, shielding Leo with her body as Vance walked over to the basement door and slowly pushed it open, revealing a steep flight of stairs plunging into total darkness.
