Chapter 11 - Crossfire in the Subterranean Vault

The blinding beam of the tactical flashlight pinned them against the towering server racks like specimens under a microscope. Clara squeezed her eyes shut against the glare, instinctively wrapping both arms around Leo to keep the boy pressed tight against her side. The heavy scent of gun oil and cordite drifted down the corridor, mingling with the hum of the electronic machinery.
"Officer Vance, lower your hands slowly and step away from the console," a sharp, gravelly voice echoed from behind the glare of the light. It belonged to a man wearing a dark tactical vest emblazoned with federal insignia, his rifle shouldered with absolute professional precision.
"We are unarmed, and there's a child with us!" Vance called out, keeping his voice steady and controlled as he slowly lowered his hands palms-up. "The real perpetrator—a man named Arthur—escaped through the secondary maintenance hatch less than two minutes ago. He left the system rigged with a timed purge sequence."
Two more tactical officers flanked the first, their weapons sweeping the server room while a fourth agent rushed forward with heavy zip-cuffs ready. They moved with the cold, practiced efficiency of a specialized extraction unit, completely ignoring Vance's warnings.
"Subject claims hostiles are active, secure the perimeter and cuff the adults," the lead agent barked without breaking stride, his eyes locked suspiciously on Clara and Leo.
"Don't touch my son!" Clara snapped, a fierce protective surge overriding her fear as she stepped physically between the advancing agent and Leo. Her tan button-down shirt was stained with sweat and dust, but her gaze was unyielding. "He is ten years old! He didn't do anything!"
"Ma'am, step aside or you will be restrained," the agent warned, his tone flat and devoid of empathy as he grabbed Clara by the wrist with rough, unyielding efficiency.
Leo let out a sharp cry of protest, trying to pull away from the second agent who had knelt to secure his small wrists. "Leave my mom alone! We didn't do anything wrong! Mr. Henderson and Arthur made me cut the grass like that!"
The lead agent froze for a fraction of a second at the mention of the names, his eyes narrowing as he tapped the communications mic on his shoulder. "Command, this is Team Alpha. We have secured the primary terminal. Subjects recovered include an adult female, a local patrol officer, and a minor matching the suspect profile in the district attorney's landscaping file."
"Negative, Alpha, check the secondary monitor," a distorted voice crackled through the agent's earpiece, filled with sudden urgency. "The countdown timer on the main server just shifted. It's not a purge sequence—it's a secondary data transmission relay targeting the federal mainframe."
The lead agent’s expression hardened instantly. He dropped the zip-cuffs and reached for his sidearm, taking a sharp step backward. "Nobody move. The server just bypassed our firewall."

Before anyone could react, the entire subterranean vault plunged into absolute pitch blackness as the main server racks shrieked, sparked, and simultaneously died.
