Chapter 5 - The Power Cut

Absolute darkness swallowed the basement instantly, broken only by the harsh, sweeping beam of Officer Vance’s tactical flashlight. The sudden loss of light sucked the warmth right out of the room, leaving Clara shivering as she instinctively pulled Leo flush against her side.

"Stay down," Vance commanded in a sharp, urgent whisper, his boots shifting on the concrete as he raised his weapon toward the top of the basement stairs.

"What's happening?" Leo whimpered, his small hand gripping the fabric of Clara’s tan shirt so hard it hurt.

"Hush, sweetie, it's just a fuse," Clara lied smoothly, though her own breath was coming in ragged gasps. She could hear the heavy breathing of the female officer stationed near the top of the stairs, followed by the faint rustle of her uniform as she drew her own weapon.

"County dispatch, this is Vance—we have a localized power disruption at the target location," Vance spoke into the shoulder mic of his radio, his voice clipped and professional, though the device emitted only a dull, rhythmic static hiss instead of a confirmation tone. "Dispatch, do you copy? Come in."

Nothing. Just white noise hissing through the tiny speaker.

"The signal's being jammed," the female officer called down from the top of the stairs, her voice strained with sudden tension. "My portable is dead too. Total dead zone."

Clara’s mind raced through a dozen worst-case scenarios. They had walked right into a trap, guided step by step by a clever old man who had vanished into thin air. She looked down at Leo, whose face was illuminated only by the erratic scatter of Vance’s flashlight beam bouncing off the concrete walls. The intricate maps, the poisoned turf, the fake scavenger hunt—it all pointed to something far larger and much more dangerous than a missing municipal clerk.

"We need to get out of here right now," Clara urged, her voice trembling with rising panic as she tugged Leo toward the stairs.

"Hold on, Clara," Vance warned, keeping his flashlight trained on the dark corner near the utility sink. "We don't move until I secure the exit."

As Vance stepped toward the stairs, a heavy metallic thud echoed from above, followed by the unmistakable sound of the heavy oak front door being slammed shut and a thick steel deadbolt sliding into place with a definitive, chilling clack.

"Hey! Open this door!" Vance shouted, charging up the wooden steps three at a time, throwing his weight against the basement door at the top.

The door didn't budge an inch. It had been reinforced from the outside with heavy iron brackets. From the darkness of the far corner near the utility sink, a slow, deliberate round of applause began to echo through the empty room.
