Chapter 8 - The Countdown to Collapse

The small red light on Higgins’s remote detonator began to blink with a rapid, hypnotic pulse. The deep, subterranean hum of the server racks suddenly pitched upward into a deafening whine as the emergency shutdown sequence initiated itself across the entire underground facility.
"You're going to kill hundreds of innocent people in this district just to cover up a data glitch?" Miller groaned from the floor, his face pale as he pressed his hand hard against his wounded shoulder to stem the blood loss.
Higgins didn't even look down at the injured officer. He kept his cold, steady gaze locked on Arthur. "Collateral metrics are automatically adjusted by the quarterly loss-adjustment algorithms, Officer Miller. Progress requires sacrifice. And old men like you two are obsolete relics of an inefficient past."
Arthur didn't panic. Instead, a grim, quiet calm washed over him. His eyes flicked to the blinking progress bar on the main monitor, which had crept up to ninety-one percent while Higgins was talking. The uncompressed analog files were still uploading, bleeding old family photographs, handwritten recipes, and forgotten childhood lullabies directly into the corporate mainframe.
"You think you’ve won, Thomas," Arthur said softly, his voice cutting through the whining hum of the servers. "You think you can erase history and replace it with your synthetic feeds. But you can't delete what’s already been felt."
Higgins frowned, his finger hovering over the final trigger press. "What are you talking about?"
"Look at the screen," Arthur whispered with a faint, knowing smile.
Higgins glanced up at the monitor. The error logs weren't just overflowing; they were mutating. The corporate logo at the top of the display had dissolved into a pixelated image of an old swing set under a sunny sky. The system’s core logic was being infected by the very human chaos it tried so hard to eliminate.
“Critical error,” the automated voice echoed, now sounding remarkably like a young girl whispering in the dark. “Memory core integrity compromised. Restarting in three... two...”
"Shut it down!" Higgins yelled to his enforcers, panic finally piercing his calm exterior. "Shoot the console! Destroy the terminal now!"
Before the enforcers could raise their rifles, Arthur reached behind his back and slammed the master circuit breaker downward with all his remaining strength. A blinding flash of white light filled the subterranean cavern, followed by a concussive shockwave that blew out every server rack within a fifty-foot radius.

The lights went completely black, plunging the underground chamber into absolute, deafening silence.
