Chapter 11 - Inside the Lion’s Den

The small brown teddy bear landed softly in the gravel near the drainage pipe with a faint metallic clink. Within seconds, the red sensor lights on the roof of Warehouse 42 pivoted sharply toward the sound. A synthetic alarm chirped twice, and three heavily armored enforcers broke away from the loading bay entrance, rushing toward the north wall with their assault rifles raised.

"Now!" Maya hissed, sprinting forward across the gravel with Arthur and Miller close behind.

They reached the heavy steel loading door just as the enforcers rounded the corner of the building. Maya jammed a small digital bypass tool into the door’s electronic keypad, her fingers flying over the interface. The small screen flashed yellow, then green, and the heavy door groaned upward on its tracks, revealing a cavernous, dimly lit interior filled with rows of stacked shipping containers and humming electronic generator units.

They slipped inside just as the door began to close behind them. The air inside the warehouse was thick with the smell of ozone and hot metal. In the center of the vast room sat a raised steel platform surrounded by complex medical equipment and flashing diagnostic monitors.

And there, strapped securely to a pediatric medical chair beneath a glowing neural-interface halo, sat little Leo.

The toddler was motionless, his eyes glazed over as a steady stream of blue data light pulsed between his temples and a towering mainframe computer bank nearby.

"Leo!" Arthur cried out, breaking into a run across the open concrete floor.

"Arthur, wait! It's a trap!" Miller shouted, raising his pistol.

Before Arthur could reach the platform, the shadows around them suddenly erupted with light as a dozen overhead halogen fixtures snapped on simultaneously. Chief Higgins stepped out from behind a towering stack of shipping containers, flanked by four armed enforcers who immediately leveled their weapons at Arthur’s chest.

Higgins was no longer wearing his pristine white uniform shirt; he wore a tactical vest, and his face was twisted into an expression of cold, unrelenting triumph.

"I wondered how long it would take you to crawl out of the woodwork," Higgins said, walking slowly toward the medical platform. "You really are a persistent old ghost, Arthur."

Arthur stopped a few yards away, his chest heaving as he glared at the chief. "Let the boy go, Thomas. The main grid is down. You've already lost."

Higgins laughed, a dry, humorless sound that echoed off the metal walls. "You think a simple municipal blackout stops the Corporation? This facility runs on an isolated micro-grid, Arthur. And Leo is the final key to restoring our entire network. With his neural bridge fully integrated, we won't just control the city—we’ll control every human mind in the tri-state area."
