Chapter 5 - Descent into the Core

The rusted iron ladder led downward into absolute darkness, the only sound being the rhythmic dripping of water somewhere deep within the concrete bowels of the earth. Arthur didn’t hesitate. He swung his legs over the edge and began descending, his old joints protesting with every rung. Miller followed closely behind, his flashlight cutting through the gloom and casting erratic beams against the damp, mold-streaked walls.
"Watch your step," Arthur called back over his shoulder. "The seismic shifts a few years back cracked the lower drainage pipes."
They dropped down onto a concrete landing that opened into a vast, subterranean chamber humming with a low, bone-chilling vibration. Rows of massive, liquid-cooled server racks stretched out into the distance, their indicator lights blinking in hypnotic patterns of blue and amber.
Miller swept his flashlight across the expanse, his eyes widening in shock. "This isn't just a local drainage hub. This is a shadow-node for the entire district’s neural network."
"Clara helped design this facility before they repurposed her," Arthur explained, walking briskly toward a central console that sat beneath a massive, glowing holographic display. "She built an analog backdoor into the core architecture. If we can access the master terminal here, we can intercept the memory wipe protocol before it reaches Leo."
The holographic display above them flickered, resolving into a giant, unblinking digital eye that rotated slowly in place. A synthesized, genderless voice echoed through the subterranean cavern: “Arthur Pendelton. Unauthorized intrusion. Your biological vitals indicate elevated stress levels. Surrender control immediately.”
Arthur stood his ground before the console, slamming his palm onto the manual interface plate. "Override code: Lazarus-Nine-Delta!"
The central eye flashed a brilliant, blinding crimson, and a harsh klaxon sounded through the server racks. “Access denied. Biometric signature does not match active administrative clearance.”
"It requires a secondary blood verification," Miller realized, stepping forward and pulling a field knife from his belt. "Arthur, give me your hand."
"No," Arthur said, pushing the officer back. "My blood is already flagged in the system as a primary compliance threat. It has to be someone with active administrative clearance who hasn't been flagged yet."
Miller stared at the knife in his hand, his face pale in the red glow of the server lights. "You mean me."
"You’re still a registered officer in the database," Arthur urged, grabbing Miller’s wrist. "If you do this, there’s no going back. They’ll brand you a traitor to the Corporation."
Miller looked back at the flashing holographic eye, then down at the knife. Slowly, deliberately, he pressed the blade against his palm, drawing a deep crimson line across his skin. He slammed his bleeding hand directly onto the console’s biometric scanner plate.
The system hesitated for a fraction of a second. The red warning lights flickered violently, then shifted to a steady, hopeful emerald green.

“Administrative override accepted,” the synthesized voice stated, its tone noticeably glitching. “Initiating emergency quarantine of Node Zero. Warning: Child subject’s memory scrub is currently at seventy percent.”
