Chapter 1 - The Arrest on the Grass

The afternoon sun beat down on the municipal park, casting long shadows across the manicured turf where Arthur stood handcuffed. His blue cardigan was stained with green grass blades, the fabric tearing slightly at the elbow where Officer Miller had pinned him to the earth. A few feet away, little Leo stood trembling on the rubber seat of the swing, his white sneakers with their rainbow stripes planted firmly against the chains. The small brown teddy bear lay abandoned in the dirt, its glass eye catching a stray glint of sunlight.

Chief Higgins stood over Arthur, tapping a leather-bound notepad against his thigh. The sirens of the second cruiser wailed, cutting through the humid suburban air with a mechanical shriek that made the nearby sparrows scatter into the sky.

"You knew the terms of the custody index, Arthur," Higgins said, his voice cold and devoid of inflection. "A Level Four directive applies to every citizen over seventy. You cannot harbor an unregistered minor without algorithmic clearance."

Arthur struggled against the tight grip of the steel cuffs, his white hair plastered to his forehead with sweat. "He’s my flesh and blood, Thomas! You grew up down the street from us. You remember my daughter. This automation madness has gone too far, and you know it!"

"Personal history was expunged under the 2038 Digital Welfare Act," Higgins replied, not looking up from his notepad. "The boy belongs to the municipal trust now. Process him."

Leo let out a sharp, desperate wail that echoed across the empty playground. The toddler stumbled forward out of the swing, his tiny hands outstretched toward the older man.

"No, leave grandpa, please, please!" Leo screamed, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks.

Arthur lunged forward, ignoring the pain in his shoulder joints. "Don't touch him! Just let him take his bear!"

Higgins gestured with his pen, signaling the transport unit. "Take the old man to Sector B holding. As for the child, the terminal is already syncing his biometric profile."

Leo took another staggering step forward, his voice cracking with a strange, unnatural resonance that made the nearby police radios emit a piercing feedback loop.

"Please follow, comment, save, grandpa!" Leo cried, his eyes locking onto Arthur with a terrifying, algorithmic blankness.

Arthur froze, the blood draining from his face as he realized the horrific truth behind the boy’s words.
