Chapter 8: Secrets of the Foundation

The chilling revelation hung heavily in the air long after Elena swept out of the kitchen, leaving Arthur staring blankly at the marble island. He dropped into a chair, his mind racing through years of memories, trying to separate genuine affection from calculated manipulation. Nothing made sense anymore, yet every horrifying piece fit together with mathematical precision. He had been a pawn in a game that started long before he was even born.
Desperate for answers that went beyond the family journal, Arthur knew he needed to look deeper into the physical structure of the manor itself. His grandfather had been an architect of secrets, designing hidden passages and subterranean storage rooms to conceal illicit financial gains and darker historical indiscretions. If Eleanor had been locked away, there had to be a physical record—or a final resting place—somewhere beneath the grand floors of the estate.
Late that evening, when the rest of the household had fallen into a heavy, troubled slumber, Arthur returned to the kitchen carrying a heavy flashlight and a steel crowbar. The shiny linoleum floor reflected the harsh beam of his light as he knelt beside the large kitchen island. According to the architectural blueprints he had stolen from the master archive, the original foundation of the 19th-century house featured a sub-basement that had been intentionally sealed off during the 1950s remodeling project.
With a series of heavy grunts, Arthur wedged the crowbar into the seam of a loose floor panel near the base of the island. The wood groaned in protest, old rusted nails giving way with loud, echoing snaps that sounded deafening in the quiet night. Beneath the top layer of flooring lay a heavy iron hatch, locked with an old padlock that matched the design of the vintage key currently sitting in his pocket.

Unzipping his jacket, Arthur pulled out the blood-stained key. His hands shook as he inserted it into the padlock. With a firm twist, the lock sprang open with a metallic pop. He pulled the heavy iron hatch upward, revealing a dark, yawning stone staircase descending into the damp, freezing earth beneath the manor. A wave of stagnant, ancient air rushed upward, carrying the unmistakable scent of damp soil, old iron, and forgotten tragedy.
Unbeknownst to Arthur, two small figures stood at the end of the dark hallway, peering into the kitchen with wide, terrified eyes. Abigail and Clara had followed him down, drawn by an irresistible, morbid curiosity. They watched as the man descended into the dark abyss of the sub-basement, disappearing completely from view, leaving the heavy iron door open like a gaping wound in the floor.
