Chapter 3: The Weight of Brass

Arthur dropped heavily to his knees, ignoring the sharp pain in his joints as the kitchen tiles bit into his skin. His breath came in ragged, uneven gasps as he reached out a trembling hand toward his crying daughter. Little Lily shrank back slightly, startled by the sudden movement, her green romper smudged with the metallic-smelling crimson fluid that coated her tiny fingers. In her palm, the small vintage key seemed to pulse with a dark, malignant energy, its intricate brass grooves catching the harsh overhead light.
"Lily," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic plea that sounded nothing like the authoritative master of Blackwood Manor he pretended to be. He tried to pry the heavy key from her stubborn grip, but the baby clenched her fist tighter, letting out a sharp, piercing shriek of defiance. That tiny piece of metal was now hers, a sinister inheritance passed down in a single moment of domestic rage.
Across the room, Elena groaned softly against the black granite countertop. Her dark hair was disheveled, falling across a face drained of all color. She shifted her weight, her breathing shallow and ragged. The sight of his wife moving ignited a fresh wave of panic in Arthur’s chest. He looked back at the hallway entrance, his eyes darting frantically toward the shadows where he knew the young maids were hiding. He could sense their silent, judging presence piercing through the darkness, absorbing every agonizing detail of his disgrace.

In the hallway, Abigail gripped Clara’s shoulder so tightly her knuckles turned completely white. Clara wanted to cry out, to run to the fallen woman who had always secretly brought them warm milk and crusty bread on cold winter nights, but Abigail’s fierce, protective grip kept her rooted in place. They were invisible ghosts in this grand, decaying prison, and ghosts did not interfere with the living.
Arthur scooped Lily up into his arms, awkwardly cradling her against his dark blue shirt while keeping the other hand extended defensively toward Elena. The baby continued to sob, her tiny bloody hand reaching out to press against Arthur's cheek, leaving a smear of red across his stubbled jaw. It was a macabre painting of a family tearing itself apart from the inside out. The vintage key remained clutched tightly in Lily’s fist, a silent witness to a household built on buried secrets, deception, and a rapidly escalating violence that promised to consume them all before the night finally reached its end.
