Chapter 2: Shadows in the Hallway

The silence inside Blackwood Manor was a heavy, suffocating entity that seemed to press directly against the eardrums of anyone daring to enter. Little Clara stood frozen in the dim corridor, her small hands tightly clutching the fabric of her matching maid uniform, her eyes wide with a terror far beyond her years. Beside her, her older sister Abigail swallowed hard, her throat burning with unspoken warnings. They had heard the heavy thud from the kitchen moments before—a dull, brutal sound that instantly shattered the fragile peace they had lived under for months.

Arthur’s frantic breathing echoed from the kitchen tiles, mingling with the persistent, high-pitched wails of his infant daughter, little Lily. Inside the brightly lit kitchen, the chaos of a broken domestic life unfolded under the harsh glare of overhead lights. Elena lay motionless against the cold black granite countertop, her dark dress stained with the grim reality of a sudden, violent confrontation. Arthur stood over her, his hands trembling violently, the dark blue fabric of his shirt damp with sweat and adrenaline. He stared down at his own hands, unable to process the swift brutality of his own actions.

Just feet away, baby Lily crawled across the reflective, polished floor, her tiny fingers leaving crimson smudges on the immaculate surface. Her green romper was marked with the unmistakable evidence of the tragedy that had just occurred. In her small, trembling palm, she clutched the small vintage key, its ornate brass surface smeared with fresh blood. The key was an object of intense family friction, a relic belonging to the locked master archive that Arthur had forbidden anyone from opening. Yet, somehow, it had slipped out during the struggle, finding its way into the innocent grip of a toddler.

Abigail gently nudged Clara backward into the protective shadows of the wooden wainscoting. They knew the unwritten rules of the estate: never interfere, never speak unless questioned, and above all, never reveal what your eyes witnessed. But tonight was fundamentally different. The violent friction between Arthur and Elena had finally boiled over, spilling out into a horrifying reality that the children could no longer pretend did not exist.

Arthur’s gaze snapped toward the hallway. His eyes locked onto the narrow crack where the two young maids hid. His expression was not one of anger, but of sheer, unadulterated panic—a cornered animal realizing the walls were closing in. He opened his mouth, but no words came out, only a ragged gasp. The air grew colder. The secret of Blackwood Manor was no longer buried; it was bleeding out across the floor, demanding to be seen, understood, and ultimately avenged.
