Chapter 10: The Maid's Dilemma

Abigail and Clara pressed themselves flat against the kitchen wall, holding their breath as they watched Elena secure the heavy padlock on the sub-basement hatch with a chilling, methodical calmness. The sharp click of the lock echoed through the empty kitchen, sealing Arthur in the dark, damp tomb beneath their feet. Elena stood up slowly, brushing a non-existent speck of dust from her dark skirt, before turning her cold, piercing gaze directly toward the dark hallway where the two young maids were hiding.
"I know you're there," Elena said, her voice disturbingly calm, lacking any trace of surprise. "Step out where I can see you."
Trembling violently, Abigail stepped out into the kitchen light, instinctively pushing Clara behind her protective frame. They were trapped. For weeks, they had survived by blending into the woodwork, obeying every command, and pretending they were invisible. Now, standing face-to-face with a woman who had just overthrown the master of the house with calculated precision, they realized their anonymity was gone forever.
"We... we didn't mean to watch, Ma'am," Abigail stammered, her voice shaking as tears welled up in her eyes. "We won't tell anyone. Please. We just want to work. We have nowhere else to go."
Elena studied the two young girls for a long, agonizing moment. Her eyes swept over their identical maid uniforms, noting the genuine terror and vulnerability etched across their pale faces. Slowly, a softer expression flickered behind her cold exterior—a momentary flash of empathy for children trapped in a house of monsters.

"This house does not need servants anymore, girls," Elena said quietly, walking over to the marble island and picking up the blood-stained vintage key. She held it out on her open palm, offering it toward Abigail. "It needs witnesses. It needs people who know the truth so the cycle can finally end."
Abigail stared down at the small brass key. Reaching out with a trembling hand, she hesitantly accepted it. The metal was cold against her skin, carrying the heavy weight of generations of secrets, pain, and ultimate liberation. She understood then that Elena wasn't planning to hurt them; she was offering them a choice to stand on the right side of history before the final chapters of Blackwood Manor were written.
