Chapter 7: The Confrontation in the Kitchen

The kitchen was bathed in the amber glow of the early morning sun, though no one felt its warmth. Elena stood by the marble island, a white bandage wrapped neatly around her temple, her dark dress ironed and immaculate once again. Despite the physical evidence of the previous night’s violence, her posture was rigid, projecting an air of chilling composure that unnerved Arthur the moment he walked through the swinging door.
Arthur stopped dead in his tracks, the leather-bound journal and the old photograph hidden securely inside the pocket of his dark blue shirt. He looked at his wife, seeing her with entirely new eyes. The mysterious woman who had captured his heart years ago was now a stranger wrapped in layers of decades-old deception.
"You never told me about Eleanor," Arthur said, his voice dangerously quiet as he closed the distance between them, slamming the vintage key down onto the black granite countertop. The metallic clatter shattered the fragile morning silence like breaking glass.
Elena didn't flinch. She slowly turned her head to look at the blood-stained key, a faint, humorless smile touching the corners of her lips. "Did you really think you could inherit this estate, Arthur, and all its accumulated wealth, without unearthing the bodies buried beneath the foundation? You thought you bought this house with your own hard work. The truth is, you were chosen."
"Chosen for what?" Arthur shouted, the carefully maintained restraint snapping as anger surged back to the surface. "To be manipulated? To be played for a fool by a woman who refuses to age and hides her true identity in a locked room?"

"To pay the debt," Elena replied coldly, stepping away from the island and closing the space between them with terrifying grace. "Your grandfather stole everything from my family, Arthur. He locked my mother away in that very east wing until she simply faded into history. I didn't come here to love you. I came here to reclaim what is rightfully mine, and this house—and you—are just instruments in that redemption."
From the pantry doorway, hidden once again in the deep shadows, Abigail and Clara listened in stunned silence. The terrifying reality of their employers' marriage washed over them. This was no ordinary domestic dispute; it was a decades-old war of vengeance, and the innocent were merely collateral damage in a battle for ownership of Blackwood Manor.
