Chapter 9 - The Arrest of Mrs. Vance

The metallic click of handcuffs being unclipped from an officer’s belt echoed sharply in the grand dining room. Clara stared at Agent Miller in sheer disbelief, the encrypted flash drive clutched so tightly in her hand that her knuckles turned stark white.

“No, you don’t understand,” Clara pleaded, taking a desperate step backward. “I have all the evidence against Arthur! I brought down a criminal empire! You can’t arrest me!”

“You committed federal crimes to achieve it, Mrs. Vance,” Agent Miller replied with absolute professional detachment. She gestured to the two officers, who stepped forward and gently but firmly seized Clara’s arms. “You bypassed federal oversight, extorted millions, and manipulated an ongoing federal investigation. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

Clara didn’t fight them as they pulled her arms behind her back. Instead, her dark eyes searched frantically across the formal dining room until they landed on Mark.

“Mark, please!” Clara sobbed, tears streaming freely down her cheeks, ruining her makeup. “Think of Lily! She needs her mother! Please tell them to let me go!”

Mark stood motionless beside the ruined white tablecloth, staring down at the spilled red wine soaking into the linen. He felt completely numb. The betrayal cut deeper than any knife Arthur could have wielded. He looked over at Lily, who had finally started crying again, calling softly for her mother.

Mark walked over to his daughter, kneeling down to scoop her up into his arms, burying her face against his dark button-down shirt to shield her from the sight of her mother being placed in handcuffs.

“You can’t take her,” Mark said quietly, looking up at Agent Miller. “She’s a mother. Can’t you cut a deal?”

“That’s for a federal prosecutor and a judge to decide, Mr. Vance,” Agent Miller answered gently, her tone softening just a fraction. “Right now, she is a flight risk with stolen corporate data in her possession. We have to take her in.”

As the officers escorted Clara toward the double doors, she looked back one last time, her voice cracking with absolute heartbreak.

“I’m sorry, Mark. I truly am.”

The heavy oak doors closed shut behind them, sealing her fate. Martha let out a high-pitched, hysterical laugh from her seat at the head of the table, rocking back and forth in her dark blue blouse.

“The house of cards falls down on all of us,” Martha cackled madly. “Generations of sin, wiped out in a single night.”

Mark turned away from his mother in disgust. He held Lily tightly, whispering reassurances into her blonde hair. The federal agents began clearing the room, bagging evidence, photographing the spilled wine and shattered crystal glasses.

Agent Miller lingered behind, walking over to Mark with a heavy expression. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small piece of folded paper, pressing it into Mark’s hand.

“You should take your daughter and leave through the back exit immediately, Mr. Vance,” Agent Miller advised quietly. “And whatever you do, don’t look inside the bottom drawer of Arthur’s executive desk in the study before you go.”
