Chapter 13 - The Footsteps in the Dark

Mark froze instantly, his heart hammering against his ribs so violently he feared it would wake Lily. He pulled his daughter tighter against his dark button-down shirt, pressing his back flat against the cold, damp stone wall of the subterranean tunnel. The darkness was absolute; he couldn’t even see his own hand in front of his face.

“Who’s there?” Mark called out, his voice echoing hollowly down the narrow corridor.

There was no verbal response. Just another slow, deliberate footstep scraping against the concrete floor, drawing closer with chilling precision.

Lily stirred in his arms, letting out a soft, frightened whimper. “Daddy? I’m scared.”

“Shh, baby, it’s okay, close your eyes,” Mark whispered frantically, his mind racing through every possible escape route.

He reached into his pocket, cursing himself for not having a flashlight, relying solely on the tactile memory of the stone walls. As the unseen figure approached, the beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight suddenly cut through the darkness, blinding Mark with a harsh, piercing glare.

Behind the glaring light stood a tall, broad-shouldered man wearing a dark tactical vest over a black shirt—Victor. The man who had delivered the security footage to Arthur earlier that evening. He held a suppressed pistol pointed steadily toward the floor, his expression carved from stone.

“End of the line, Mark,” Victor said, his voice flat and devoid of any emotion.

Mark shielded Lily with his body, stepping back until his heels hit the opposite wall.

“Victor, you’re too late. The feds already arrested Arthur. They have everything,” Mark lied boldly, trying to buy time.

Victor let out a cold, humorless chuckle.

“The feds have Arthur, yes. But Arthur was just the front man,” Victor replied, stepping closer, the beam of his flashlight illuminating the grim determination on his face. “I represent the board members who actually fund this operation. And those board members cannot afford to let you walk out of this tunnel with whatever is in your head.”

Mark’s blood ran cold. Arthur wasn’t the top of the food chain. There was an entire syndicate of powerful, untouchable criminals backing him, and Victor was their cleaner.

“You can’t shoot me down here. The feds are swarming the estate above us. Gunshots will bring an entire tactical team down this tunnel in seconds,” Mark argued, keeping his voice remarkably steady despite the sheer terror gripping his chest.

Victor smirked, shifting his grip on the suppressed firearm.

“Who said anything about shooting you?” Victor asked softly. “A tragic accident in an old underground tunnel—a structural collapse. It happens all the time.”

Before Victor could raise the weapon, a sudden, blinding flash of light erupted from the entrance behind Victor, followed by the deafening roar of a flashbang grenade.
