Chapter 4 - The Hidden Key

Mark’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He saw the heavy iron key resting discretely behind the silver plate, half-hidden by the folds of the crisp white tablecloth. Clara kept her head bowed, staring fixedly at her untouched plate, her fingers trembling slightly. She had betrayed Arthur’s trust to help them, risking the wrath of the patriarch. Mark knew he had to act fast before anyone noticed the subtle exchange.
“I need to sit down,” Mark said, forcing his voice to sound defeated. He let out a long, heavy sigh, sagging his shoulders to project weakness. “Lily is exhausted. Can we at least get her some water?”
Martha scoffed, crossing her arms over her dark blue blouse.
“Water? After the scene you just caused?” Martha sneered. “You should be begging for forgiveness, not making demands.”
“Let him be, Martha,” Arthur commanded quietly, taking another slow sip of his dark red wine. He peered over the rim of his glass, studying Mark with clinical detachment. “A tired child is a compliant child. Sit her down at the table. Feed her something. It’s time we had a civilized family discussion about the future.”
Mark carefully carried Lily over to an empty chair beside Clara. He gently placed his daughter down, whispering soothing words into her ear. Lily sniffled, rubbing her tear-stained eyes with the back of her small hand, her pink dress slightly rumpled. Mark sat down right next to her, positioning his body strategically to block Arthur and Martha’s line of sight.
His hand slid stealthily across the edge of the polished mahogany table, brushing past the fine porcelain plates and crystal wine glasses. His fingers grazed the cold metal of the iron key. With a quick, practiced motion, he scooped it up and slid it directly into the deep pocket of his dark button-down shirt.
Across the table, Clara let out a barely audible exhale of relief, though her eyes remained wide with terror.
“So,” Arthur began, setting his glass down with a definitive clink. “Let us talk about the documents Lily found in the wall safe behind my desk. The ones detailing the offshore accounts and the transfer of corporate assets.”
Mark froze. So that was it. It wasn’t just family drama or hurt feelings; it was about billions of dollars in illegal corporate embezzlement. Arthur had been looting the family foundation for decades, and Lily had stumbled upon the ledger while playing hide-and-seek.
“I don’t know anything about offshore accounts,” Mark lied smoothly, keeping his hand firmly in his pocket, gripping the heavy iron key.
Arthur’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the white tablecloth.
“Don’t lie to me, boy,” Arthur hissed, his veneer of civility cracking. “Lily read aloud the name of the Swiss bank account while you were standing right outside the door. You heard her.”
“I heard nothing,” Mark retorted coldly.

Suddenly, the heavy oak double doors behind them swung violently wide open, and a towering figure in a black suit stepped into the room, holding an open laptop displaying live security footage of the front gates.
