Chapter 6 - The Scramble Across the Table

Mark vaulted over the white tablecloth, scattering fine porcelain plates and shattering crystal wine glasses as he lunged toward Arthur. The heavy silver candlestick holder slipped from Arthur’s aged hands, clattering loudly against the mahogany floor. Mark tackled his adoptive father to the ground just as the heavy oak double doors burst open again, this time revealing federal agents in tactical gear with their weapons drawn.

“Federal agents! Stay where you are! Hands where we can see them!” shouted the lead agent, a tall woman with sharp features and a federal windbreaker.

Martha screamed, covering her ears and dropping heavily back into her chair, sobbing hysterically as she stared at the spilled red wine soaking into the white tablecloth. Victor raised his hands slowly, stepping away from the table with calculated caution.

Mark pinned Arthur to the polished floor, holding the old man’s wrists firmly against the ground. Arthur thrashed weakly beneath him, cursing under his breath, his face purple with fury.

“Get off me, you worthless parasite!” Arthur spat, glaring up at Mark with naked hatred.

“It’s over, Arthur,” Mark panted, sweat beading on his forehead. He looked over his shoulder at the federal agents pouring into the grand dining room. “He’s right here. He has the safe codes, the ledgers, and the offshore accounts.”

The lead agent stepped forward, nodding to two officers who immediately moved in to take Arthur into custody. They pulled the seventy-five-year-old man up roughly, slapping cold steel handcuffs around his frail wrists. Arthur stumbled, his grey shirt twisting awkwardly as he was hauled to his feet.

Lily watched the commotion from her chair, still clutching her small hands together. Clara rushed over to her, scooping the five-year-old girl into a tight embrace, burying her face in the blonde hair and crying tears of pure relief.

“We’re safe, baby. It’s all over,” Clara whispered soothingly, rocking Lily back and forth.

Mark stood up, brushing off his dark button-down shirt. He looked around the ruined dining room—the shattered glass, the spilled wine resembling blood, the broken family dynamics laid bare under the harsh light of federal scrutiny.

The lead agent approached Mark, flashing her badge.

“Are you Mark Vance?” she asked professionally.

“Yes, I am,” Mark answered, breathing heavily.

“We’ve been tracking Arthur’s illicit financial network for over three years,” the agent said, lowering her weapon. “Your wife provided us with the exact timestamps and server locations needed to secure this warrant tonight. She saved federal investigators months of work.”

Mark turned slowly to look at Clara. She was holding Lily close, refusing to meet his gaze. A knot of unease formed instantly in Mark’s stomach. If Clara had been working with federal agents for months, why hadn’t she told him? What else was she hiding about her role in this criminal enterprise?

Before Mark could voice his rising suspicions, one of the officers searching the perimeter let out a sharp shout from the hallway.
