Chapter 14 - The Flashbang in the Tunnel

The deafening blast of the flashbang echoed violently through the narrow subterranean stone tunnel, followed by a blinding wave of white light that scorched Mark’s retinas. Victor let out a sharp grunt of pain, dropping his tactical flashlight and stumbling backward as the disorienting concussion wave knocked him off balance.
“Federal agents! Drop your weapon!” shouted a familiar female voice from the tunnel entrance behind Victor.
Agent Miller rushed down the stone steps, her tactical weapon raised and aimed squarely at Victor, backed by two heavily armed officers. Victor, clutching his ringing ears and blinking frantically against the lingering white spots in his vision, realized he was entirely cornered. He slowly lowered his hands, dropping the suppressed pistol onto the concrete floor with a heavy clatter.
“Don’t move an inch!” Agent Miller commanded sharply as the two officers moved in, slamming Victor against the damp stone wall and slapping handcuffs onto his wrists with practiced efficiency.
Mark stood frozen against the opposite wall, still shielding Lily, whose crying had turned into exhausted, silent hiccups as she buried her face in his dark button-down shirt.
Agent Miller stepped past the struggling Victor, shining a small penlight toward Mark and the little girl in the pink dress.
“Are you two alright?” Agent Miller asked, her professional demeanor softening with genuine concern.
“We’re... we’re okay,” Mark breathed out, his legs shaking violently from the sudden adrenaline crash. “How did you find us down here?”
“Martha,” Agent Miller answered simply, gesturing back toward the hidden staircase. “She buzzed the security desk and gave us the master blueprints of the estate tunnels just before she locked herself in the study. She knew Victor would come down here to silence you.”
Mark let out a long, ragged exhale, feeling the crushing weight of the evening finally lift off his shoulders just a fraction. The nightmare was drawing to a close. The syndicate was exposed, the conspirators were in handcuffs, and he and his daughter were still breathing.
“Let’s get you both up to the surface,” Agent Miller said gently, placing a steadying hand on Mark’s shoulder. “Paramedics are waiting, and you can finally go home.”
As they walked back up the stone steps and emerged into the cool night air outside the estate gates, Mark saw the flashing red and blue lights of dozens of police cruisers and federal vehicles illuminating the sprawling property. Arthur was already being loaded into the back of a van, while Clara was being escorted toward another, her head bowed in quiet defeat.
Mark paused near the edge of the driveway, setting Lily down gently on her feet. She held his hand tightly, looking up at him with wide, sleepy blue eyes.
“Daddy, are we ever coming back to this big scary house?” Lily asked softly, her voice filled with innocent dread.
Mark looked down at his daughter, then glanced back one last time at the grand ancestral mansion where generations of lies, betrayal, and violence had finally been brought to light. He squeezed Lily’s small hand, feeling the warm, steady pulse of life and new beginnings.
“Never again, sweetheart,” Mark whispered, turning his back on the estate forever. “We’re going home.”

As father and daughter walked side by side toward the waiting rescue vehicle, a sleek black luxury sedan pulled up silently behind the barricades, its tinted window slowly rolling down to reveal a shadowy figure watching Mark intently from the backseat.
