Chapter 8: The Weight of Concrete Evidence

The heavy ledger connected with Julian’s stomach with a dull, sickening thud. The breath left his lungs in a violent whoosh, stopping his momentum entirely. Stumbling backward on the slick, rain-soaked marble, Julian flailed his arms wildly to regain his balance, his polished leather shoes slipping on the ice.

Eleanor screamed in horror as her son pitched backward, his arms windmilling before he slammed hard against the stone balustrade. The impact knocked the wind out of him completely, and he slumped sideways, groaning in pain against the cold railing.

Clara didn't wait. Clutching the ledger to her chest, she bolted past Eleanor, who swung the brass candlestick wildly in a blind rage. The heavy metal grazed Clara’s shoulder, tearing the fabric of her white sweater and leaving a searing red welt, but Clara didn't even feel the pain. She burst through the French doors into the warm, dimly lit study, raced out into the hallway, and sprinted toward the grand staircase.

Footsteps echoed from the foyer below as heavy boots pounded up the stairs. Clara stopped dead at the landing, pressing herself against the carved wooden banister.

Detective Marcus Vance came bounding around the corner, his trench coat soaked through, his service weapon drawn and ready. He spotted Clara immediately, lowering his gun slightly as he assessed her bruised shoulder and the heavy book in her arms.

"Are you alright, Clara?" Marcus asked breathlessly, checking the hallway behind him.

"They have the original land titles and the insurance fraud files," Clara gasped, holding out the leather ledger. "Marcus, my father didn't die in an accident. They poisoned his brakes, and they have the bank statements proving every dollar they stole."

Before Marcus could take the book, the heavy oak double doors at the bottom of the grand staircase blew open with a deafening crash. A squad of state troopers in tactical gear poured into the foyer, their rifles raised.

At the top of the stairs behind Clara, Eleanor appeared, her gray hair completely undone, her rust-colored shirt stained with spilled wine from earlier, looking like a mad queen stripped of her crown.

"Arrest her!" Eleanor shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at Clara. "She broke into our safe! She attacked my son! She’s insane!"

Marcus stepped in front of Clara, holding up his badge toward the lead trooper. "Ignore her. Secure the perimeter and place Julian and Eleanor Vance under arrest for corporate fraud, extortion, and the homicide of Arthur Sterling."

The lead trooper nodded, signaling his men to move up the stairs. But as the officers advanced, Eleanor reached into her pocket with a terrifying, slow smile and pulled out a small, old-fashioned brass detonator switch.
