Chapter 5: The Whisper Through the Keyhole

The threat hung in the confined air of the study like a physical presence. Clara stared at the dark wooden grain of the door, her blood running cold. Julian’s voice had carried no hesitation, no heat—only the absolute, terrifying certainty of a man who viewed murder as merely another administrative task.
She forced herself to look back down at the ledger. The insurance payout figures danced before her blurred vision. Her father’s death had never been an accident. The brakes on his vintage sedan hadn't failed naturally; they had been deliberately tampered with by someone who had full access to the family garage. Someone with Julian’s technical background and Eleanor’s ruthless ambition.
A soft metallic scrape came from the keyhole. Clara froze, holding her breath. Someone was inserting a master key from the outside. The old brass lock clicked, the internal tumblers shifting with agonizing slowness.
"Julian, stop!" Clara whispered frantically, backing away toward the French doors that led out to the second-story balcony. "If you do this, the authorities will find out. The ledger is already copied!"
A dry, raspy laugh echoed from the hallway—not Julian, but Eleanor. "You foolish girl. Who do you think owns the local police precinct? Who do you think signed the coroner’s report three years ago?"

The lock gave a final, decisive turn. The heavy door began to swing open into the darkness.
Clara didn't hesitate. She threw open the French doors, stepping out into the freezing midnight air just as Julian’s hand caught the edge of the door frame behind her.
