Chapter 13: The Iron Gate of San Lucas

The freezing mountain wind whipped through the razor wire atop the high chain-link fence as Clara and Marcus crept silently along the timberline toward the main security gate of San Lucas Sanitarium. The sprawling stone complex looked more like a medieval fortress than a medical facility, its narrow arched windows glowing with a sickly, sterile yellow light against the pitch-black backdrop of the storm.
Marcus crouched behind a thick cluster of pine trees, raising a pair of military-grade night-vision binoculars to his eyes. "There are two guards inside the booth," Marcus whispered without turning around. "And an active thermal camera sweep covering the perimeter every ninety seconds. We have a brief window when the sweep hits the eastern tower."
Clara nodded, her eyes locked on the heavy iron gate. Her heart pounded in her ears, but her hands were entirely steady. The fear that had paralyzed her during those endless dinners with Julian and Eleanor had burned away, replaced by a cold, sharp clarity.
"When the sweep turns, we move," Clara instructed softly, taking command of the situation with an authority that surprised even Marcus.
"Right on ninety seconds," Marcus muttered, counting the seconds under his breath. "Three... two... one. Now!"
They bolted from the treeline, moving with silent, desperate speed across the open gravel clearing. Clara’s boots crunched softly on the frozen ground as she reached the side of the security booth just as the thermal scanner swung away toward the eastern tower. Marcus jammed a heavy iron crowbar into the mechanical latch of the pedestrian side-gate, throwing his entire weight against the metal until the rusted padlock snapped with a loud, metallic crack.
They slipped through the gap into the interior courtyard just as the floodlights swept back across the spot they had occupied seconds before.
Inside the central courtyard, the air smelled of damp stone, old medicine, and unrelenting despair. Towering gothic archways led into a labyrinth of bleak corridors. Clara didn't hesitate; she pulled the San Lucas facility blueprint from the back of the ledger and pointed toward a heavy metal door marked Sub-Level Ward C.

"That's where the long-term unregistered patients are kept," Clara whispered, gripping the heavy iron ring of the sub-level access door.
As she pulled the door open, a wave of warm, stagnant air rushed out to meet them—carrying with it a faint, haunting sound that made Clara freeze in her tracks: a woman softly humming a lullaby she hadn't heard since she was a little girl.
