Chapter 7: The Ghost from the Archives

The blinding beam of the flashlight locked onto Julian like a physical restraint, forcing him to drop his hands and squint aggressively into the glare. Clara gripped the stone balustrade, leaning forward to get a better look at the man standing beside the idling SUV. The stranger lowered his hood, revealing a sharp, weathered face framed by iron-gray hair and a deeply lined forehead. It was Detective Marcus Vance—no relation to Julian, despite the shared name—a disgraced investigator who had spent the last decade trying to take down the corrupt local elite before being forced off the force.

"Julian Vance," Detective Vance repeated, his voice carrying clearly over the sound of the freezing rain. "Step back inside the house right now. Or I release the federal wiretaps I’ve spent the last six months compiling on your family's shell companies."

Julian’s face twisted into an ugly snarl of pure rage. The cool, detached businessman vanished entirely, replaced by a desperate, cornered animal. He looked from Detective Marcus down to the ledger in Clara’s hands, calculating his dwindling options with frantic speed.

"You're too late, Marcus," Julian sneered, taking a menacing step toward Clara before the detective could draw his weapon. "The girl has the book, but she’s standing on a thirty-foot drop in an ice storm. One wrong step..."

"Julian!" Eleanor’s shrill voice cut through the doorway from inside the warm study. She appeared in the French doors holding a heavy brass candlestick like a club, her eyes wide with psychotic desperation. "Don't talk to him! Push her! Push her off right now before the federal agents arrive at the front gate!"

Clara backed up until her heels touched the very edge of the slick stone ledge. Below, Detective Marcus unholstered a heavy-caliber firearm, shouting a final warning as he began sprinting toward the side staircase.

"If you move another inch, Julian, I swear I'll put a bullet through your chest!" Marcus yelled.

Julian didn't hesitate. With a sudden, explosive burst of speed, he lunged across the wet tiles, his hands outstretched to shove Clara over the precipice.

Clara ducked violently to the side, swinging the heavy leather ledger like a weapon directly into Julian’s solar plexus with all her remaining strength.
