Chapter 4: Shadows in the Hallway

The heavy leather ledger felt like a brick in Clara’s hands as she sprinted down the dimly lit corridor toward the guest study, the only room with an interior lock that actually worked. Behind her, Julian’s heavy footsteps pounded against the hardwood floor, accompanied by Eleanor’s shrill, panicked commands.

"Stop her, Julian! She’ll find the offshore papers! She’ll ruin everything!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings of the foyer.

Clara reached the heavy mahogany door of the study, threw herself inside, and slammed it shut just as Julian’s shoulder hit the outer panels with a dull thud. She fumbled with the antique skeleton key, turning it twice in the lock. The heavy iron mechanism engaged with a satisfying, solid click that echoed through the small room.

"Clara! Open this door right now!" Julian shouted, his calm corporate veneer entirely shattered, replaced by the raw panic of a man whose carefully constructed web of lies was unraveling. "You have no idea what you’re messing with. That book contains things you aren't equipped to understand!"

Clara pressed her back against the wooden door, breathing heavily, and looked around the suffocatingly dark study. Desk lamps cast long, ghostly shadows across leather-bound law volumes and expensive mahogany furniture. She switched on the small brass desk lamp, illuminating the pages of the ledger she held tightly against her chest. With trembling fingers, she opened to the bookmarked page, and the air left her lungs in a sharp gasp.

The columns of numbers weren't just about real estate transfers or corporate mergers. They detailed systematic asset stripping following her father's death—transfers signed with forged signatures bearing a striking resemblance to her own handwriting. But worse than the financial fraud was a handwritten memo clipped to the back page, signed by an accountant she had never met, detailing a massive life insurance payout issued three weeks after her father’s fatal accident.

The payout had been deposited directly into a joint account belonging to Julian and Eleanor.

Outside the door, the pounding stopped abruptly. Silence settled over the hallway, a silence far more terrifying than their shouting. Then, Julian’s voice drifted through the wood, calm, chillingly polite, and utterly devoid of human warmth.

"Keep reading, Clara. Because by morning, you won't be alive to tell anyone."
