Chapter 8 - The Hidden Beneficiary

The violent scuffle between Julian and Marcus suddenly ground to a halt as Laura let out a sharp, choked gasp. Both men froze on the floor, their clothes stained with white cake frosting and dirt, their chests heaving with exhaustion. Elena slowly rose from where she had fallen against the sofa, her short brown hair wild and her expression twisted with paranoia. They all turned to look at the teenager sitting against the wall, her small hand trembling violently as she clutched the single dry document against her blue t-shirt.

“What did you say?” Elena whispered, taking a cautious step toward her daughter. “What do you have in your hand, Laura?”

Laura slowly lifted her head, her tear-filled eyes burning with a sudden, unfamiliar fire that terrified the adults standing over her. She looked past her mother, past her uncle, and straight at her father, who was slowly pushing himself up from the floor.

“You’ve been tearing this house apart, beating me, screaming, and destroying everything,” Laura said, her voice shaking but laced with a chilling clarity. “You’ve been fighting over money that doesn't even exist.”

Marcus wiped a smear of blood from his lip, his eyes darting suspiciously to the paper in her hand.

“Don't be ridiculous, Laura. Give me that paper right now. Your grandfather set up a multi-million-dollar trust, and I intend to collect my share,” Marcus demanded, taking a slow step forward.

“Stop right there!” Laura screamed, pulling her knees up to her chest and pressing her back harder against the wall. “Read it! Read the name at the bottom of this page!”

Julian pushed himself up from the floor, wiping his bloody lip with the back of his hand, and cautiously approached his niece. He knelt down beside her, ignoring Marcus’s angry protests, and gently pulled the paper from her trembling fingers. Julian’s eyes scanned the legal text at the bottom of the page, and the color instantly drained from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost.

“This... this isn't possible,” Julian muttered, his voice dropping to a horrified whisper. “Father told me he burned this document years ago.”

Elena lunged forward, snatching the paper out of Julian’s slack grip before he could react. She read the printed text, her eyes darting frantically across the lines until they locked onto the final signature. Elena let out a long, shuddering screech that sounded like a wounded animal, letting the paper flutter down onto the frosting-covered floor.

The primary beneficiary of the estate wasn't Elena, wasn't Julian, and wasn't Marcus.
