Chapter 11 - The Security Breach

The deafening wail of the security alarm ripped through the house, bouncing off the walls and drowning out the sound of the howling wind outside. Elena covered her ears with a shriek, curling into a tight ball on the floor near the sofa. Marcus cursed loudly, slamming his hands over his ears as he glared at David across the room. Julian didn't flinch from the noise; his eyes remained locked on his older brother, his expression hardened with suspicion and lingering rage.
“What did you do, David?” Julian shouted over the screeching alarm, stepping closer to block his brother’s path to Laura.
David ignored him, his gaze fixed sharply on the flashing red light of the keypad mounted near the front door.
“I didn't trigger it,” David shouted back, his calm facade finally cracking to reveal a sliver of genuine panic. “The moment I stepped onto the property with this key, the system recognized my biometric signature and cross-referenced it with the federal database. Someone else armed the override before I got here.”
Marcus shoved past Julian, grabbing David by the heavy wool lapels of his trench coat and slamming him back against the hallway wall with a dull thud.
“Stop lying to us!” Marcus roared, spattering spit as his face twisted with fury. “You’ve been playing us all for fools for twelve years! Who else is involved in this?”
David didn't fight back. He simply raised his hands, holding the heavy steel key out toward Marcus to show he meant no harm.
“Look at the keypad, you idiot!” David hissed, tilting his head toward the blinking red digits.
Marcus hesitated, glancing over his shoulder at the wall. The security panel wasn't just flashing red; a digital countdown was ticking rapidly downward from sixty seconds, accompanied by a harsh, intermittent beep that signaled an impending system lockout.
Laura slowly pushed herself up from the floor, her bruised arm aching with every movement as she stared at the flashing numbers with mounting dread.
“What happens when it reaches zero?” Laura asked, her voice trembling so badly she could barely form the words.
David swallowed hard, his eyes darting back to the teenager.
“The house locks down automatically,” David said grimly. “Steel shutters drop over every window and door, cutting off all communication with the outside world. And the safe deposit box coordinates are permanently erased from the server.”
Elena scrambled to her feet, her face stained with tears and cake frosting, pointing a shaking finger at David.
“We have to shut it down!” Elena screamed hysterically. “Turn off the alarm, David! You know the master code!”
David shook his head slowly, a grim smile touching the corners of his mouth.
“I don't know the master code anymore, Elena,” David replied softly. “Father changed it on the day he died. And he gave the only backup sequence to the person whose birthday we were celebrating today.”
