Chapter 13 - The Heavy Steel Shutters

The frantic tapping of the buttons on the security keypad echoed like gunfire in the silent room. Julian slammed his palm down on the enter key just as the digital display flashed 0:01. For a agonizing second, the blaring alarm continued its high-pitched shriek, and the red lights flashed furiously. Then, with a loud, mechanical clunk that reverberated through the floorboards, the piercing siren abruptly died, replaced by a low, rhythmic hum.
The tension in the room snapped like a stretched rubber band. Elena collapsed onto the sofa, burying her face in her hands as silent, exhausted sobs wracked her frame. Marcus let out a long, shaky breath, leaning heavily against the wall with his eyes closed. David lowered his head, running a hand through his greying hair as the adrenaline slowly began to recede from his veins.
Laura stood frozen against the wall, still clutching the open silver locket in her trembling hand, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath. The micro-film strip containing the rest of the override sequence gleamed under the hallway light.
“You actually did it,” David whispered, looking at his niece with a strange mix of awe and deep sorrow. “You saved us from being sealed inside a tomb.”
Before anyone could answer, a loud, heavy grinding sound erupted from the front windows.
Every head snapped toward the living room windows as thick, interlocking steel security shutters dropped from the overhead valances with terrifying speed, slamming shut over the glass and plunging the room into near-total darkness. The only illumination left came from the flickering hallway panel, casting a sickly yellow hue over the ruined birthday cake and the scattered party debris.
“What’s happening?” Laura screamed, her voice cracking with terror as she pressed herself tighter against the wall. “You said the code would stop the lockdown!”
Julian lunged toward the keypad, tapping the screen frantically, but the display screen had gone completely black, replaced by a single blinking amber light.
“The code stopped the house from erasing the coordinates,” Julian said, his voice tight with rising panic as he tried to pry the plastic casing off the wall with his bare fingers. “It didn't stop the perimeter seal. Someone outside triggered the manual lockdown from the master terminal down at the property gates.”
Marcus pushed himself away from the wall, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the heavy steel shutters blocking all exits.
“Who else has access to the master gate terminal?” Marcus demanded, turning his cold gaze directly toward David.
David stared at the dark steel barrier, his jaw tightening as the grim truth finally settled over him like a shroud.
“Only one person,” David replied quietly. “The person who helped the old man set up this entire trap from the very beginning.”

Elena slowly lifted her head from the sofa, her eyes wide with sheer horror as she whispered a name that none of them had dared to speak all night.
