Chapter 7 - The Scramble in the Ruins

The soggy envelope hit the floor with a heavy, wet thud, scattering damp pages across the cake-smeared hardwood. Marcus didn't care about the frosting or the shattered plates; he scrambled across the floor on his hands and knees like a desperate animal, grabbing at loose sheets of paper. Julian recovered instantly, lunging forward and kicking Marcus squarely in the ribs to knock him off balance. Marcus grunted, rolling away and gasping for breath, but not before clutching a single, intact document tightly in his fist.
“I got the transfer authorization!” Marcus yelled triumphantly, scrambling back to his feet while clutching the wet paper against his chest.
Elena stared at him in horror, her hands flying to her face.
“Give that back to me, Marcus! That’s mine!” Elena shrieked, lunging toward her ex-husband with her fingernails bared like claws.
Marcus sidestepped her effortlessly, shoving Elena backward so hard she stumbled into the remaining stack of birthday balloons, sending them scattering across the ceiling with soft squeaks. Julian grabbed Marcus by the collar of his wool coat, wrenching him backward and slamming him against the living room wall with enough force to rattle the framed family photos hanging on the plaster.
“Let go of me, you lunatic!” Marcus roared, throwing a wild punch that caught Julian squarely on the jaw.
Julian stumbled back a step, tasting blood, but he didn't let go. He lunged forward again, wrestling Marcus to the floor as the two grown men tangled in a violent heap amid the cake crumbs and shattered party decorations. The older relatives in the background cried out in alarm, finally turning toward the front door and fleeing the house into the cold night air, leaving the ruined living room entirely to the warring family members.
Laura sat frozen against the base of the wall, watching the men tear at each other over a wet piece of paper. Her breathing came in short, jagged gasps. The bruises on her arm ached fiercely, but the pain inside her chest was far worse. She looked down and noticed a single, undamaged page that had slipped out from the ruined envelope and slid across the floor until it rested right against the toe of her boot.
Slowly, trembling from head to foot, Laura reached down and picked up the paper. Her eyes scanned the typed legal headers and signatures at the bottom.
It wasn't a transfer authorization for money. It was a medical disclosure form detailing her grandfather’s terminal diagnosis—and a second document naming someone else entirely as the primary beneficiary.

Laura’s breath hitched in her throat as she read the name typed at the bottom of the page, realizing that every single person in this room was fighting a war over a completely fabricated lie.
