Chapter 5 - The Struggle for the Envelope

Marcus moved with terrifying speed, his broad shoulders cutting through the space between them before Julian could intercept him. Elena screamed, diving forward to block her ex-husband, but Marcus shoved her aside with brutal force, sending her crashing against the ruined birthday table amidst the leftover cake and shattered paper plates. White frosting smeared across Elena’s maroon top as she hit the floor with a heavy thud, gasping for air. Laura shrieked, backing away until her spine hit the living room wall, her bruised arm throbbing with sharp pains as Marcus closed in on her.
“Give me the envelope, Julian, or I swear I’ll take it from her,” Marcus shouted, his hand outstretched toward the yellow paper still clutched in Julian’s grip.
Julian planted his feet firmly on the hardwood floor, his eyes narrowing with lethal intent.
“You won't lay a finger on her, Marcus,” Julian warned, balling his free hand into a tight fist. “You traded your family for a stack of cash years ago. This money belongs to Laura, and nobody else.”
Marcus sneered, taking another step forward.
“You fool,” Marcus barked. “The money isn't even the point anymore. The account requires a biometric override, and only a direct blood descendant can authorize the transfer—which means Laura has to sign, or the entire sum goes to the state!”
In the background, the older relatives began murmuring in panic, some reaching for their phones while others slowly backed toward the front door to escape the impending violence. Elena groaned from the floor, pushing herself up on one elbow, her face smeared with cake frosting and tears.
“Don't you dare listen to him, Laura!” Elena cried out, coughing as she struggled to her feet. “Your father wants to use that money to disappear again, just like he did before!”
Laura looked between her mother, her uncle, and her father, her chest heaving as overwhelming panic threatened to swallow her whole. Her entire world was collapsing under a mountain of lies, violence, and greed.
“I won't sign anything!” Laura yelled over the shouting, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. “I don't care about the money! I just want you all to leave me alone!”
Julian took a protective step in front of his niece, raising the yellow envelope high in the air to keep it out of Marcus’s reach.
“Back off, Marcus! One more step and I swear I’ll burn the documents right here in front of you!” Julian yelled, pulling a silver cigarette lighter from his pocket with his free hand and snapping the cap open with a sharp click.
Marcus froze, his eyes darting to the open flame dancing inches away from the fragile yellow paper.
“You wouldn't dare,” Marcus whispered, his face contorting with rage.

Julian didn't answer; instead, he flicked the lighter flame closer to the corner of the envelope, watching the dry paper begin to curl and turn black at the edges.
