Chapter 9 - The Siege of the Foyer

From the elevated vantage point of the third-floor landing, the grand foyer below looked like a battlefield shrouded in a dense, artificial fog. The emergency backup lights cast long, eerie shadows across the marble floors, where the shattered remains of the crystal chandelier still sparkled like broken glass.

Standing near the base of the staircase was Aunt Margaret. She had discarded her cane, standing remarkably straight in her black dress, holding a heavy gas mask tightly against her face with one hand. Flanking her were two burly men in identical dark tactical gear—private mercenaries hired off the books, armed with suppressed submachine guns. They had breached the reinforced front doors from the outside, turning the Sterling mansion into a literal armed compound.

In the center of the room, huddled near the scorched alcove, Elena was kneeling on the marble floor, shielding the white-wrapped baby with her entire body. Her maid uniform was torn and stained with soot and blood, but she refused to budge an inch, her dark eyes glaring defiantly up at Margaret despite the overwhelming terror gripping her soul.

"Bring me the child!" Margaret’s muffled voice echoed up the stairwell through her respirator, dripping with venomous authority. One of the mercenaries raised his weapon, leveling the black barrel directly at Elena’s head.

"Don't you dare!" Julian roared from the third-floor landing, his voice cutting through the smoky air like a whip. He didn't hesitate; he drew his concealed firearm from his suit jacket, aiming down the stairwell with dead-eyed precision.

Marcus dropped into a sniper stance beside him, his tactical rifle instantly trained on the second mercenary standing guard near the front doors.

Margaret turned her head upward, her cold eyes locking onto Julian through the plastic visor of her mask. She didn't flinch at the sight of the drawn weapons. Instead, she let out a harsh, muffled laugh that vibrated in her chest.

"Shoot her, and the child dies with her, Julian!" Margaret screamed back, gesturing toward the mercenary. "And if you fire another shot in this house, the gas lines in the basement will detonate the entire estate. We all go down together!"

Victoria, still coughing and clutching her torn dress behind Julian, let out a piercing shriek of horror. "Mother, have you lost your mind? We're in this house too! You'll kill us all!"

"Shut up, you fool!" Margaret snapped back, her eyes wild with a desperate, unhinged ambition. "I built this dynasty from the ashes of a ruined family name. I will not let a common maid and a rogue heir destroy forty years of absolute power in a single night!"

Elena looked up from the floor, tears cutting clean tracks through the soot on her bruised cheeks. She met Julian’s gaze across the smoky expanse of the foyer, her lips moving silently. She wasn't begging for her own life; she was silently telling him to save the baby.

Julian’s finger tightened on the trigger of his weapon. The tension in the air was so thick it felt like physical pressure against his skin. Every muscle in his tall frame was coiled like a steel spring, calculating the exact trajectory, the distance, and the wind shear of the smoke drifting up from below.

"Marcus," Julian whispered, without taking his eyes off the mercenary holding Elena at gunpoint.

"Ready, sir," the security head replied instantly, his crosshairs locked on the target's chest.

"On my mark," Julian muttered, his jaw set like granite. "Take out the guards, but do not let a single bullet touch that child."

Suddenly, the heavy iron front doors swung completely open behind the mercenaries, and the flashing red and blue lights of federal tactical vehicles painted the marble walls in a violent, rhythmic strobe.
