Chapter 6 - Ghost in the Archive

The third-floor archive was a windowless vault lined with floor-to-ceiling mahogany shelves, smelling faintly of decaying paper and old leather. The emergency backup lights cast long, distorted shadows across the rows of classified family documents. Marcus stepped up to the heavy steel terminal at the center of the room, plugging a high-capacity encrypted drive into the master console with practiced ease.

Julian stood just behind him, his dark suit jacket unbuttoned, his tall frame cutting an imposing silhouette against the pale glow of the monitor. Outside the heavy reinforced door, muffled shouts and the sound of frantic pounding could still be heard from the family members trapped below, but inside the vault, the silence was absolute and suffocating.

"The drives from thirty-two years ago were flagged for permanent deletion," Marcus reported quietly, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with rhythmic precision. "Whoever wiped the main server did a thorough job. But they didn't account for the analog tape backups stored in the climate-controlled vault beneath the library."

Julian crossed his arms over his chest, his sharp gaze fixed on the scrolling lines of green code reflecting in his dark eyes. "Did you retrieve them?"

"Yes, sir," Marcus replied, pulling a bulky, vintage magnetic tape cartridge out from his tactical vest and placing it gently on the metal desk. "And that's not all. The access logs show that the deletion command wasn't executed by a low-level archivist. It was authorized using Aunt Margaret's personal master biometric key."

Julian jaw tightened, the muscles in his cheek twitching once. He had suspected as much, but seeing the digital confirmation in black and white stripped away any lingering familial sentimentality. Margaret hadn't just approved of the cover-up; she had orchestrated it from the very beginning.

Downstairs in the foyer, the situation was rapidly deteriorating. Richard had managed to rally several of the younger male cousins, and together they were using a heavy marble console table as a makeshift battering ram against the reinforced oak front doors. With a deafening splintering sound, the upper wood panel cracked, letting a cold gust of night air sweep into the hall.

"Julian! We know you're up there!" Richard’s voice roared up the stairwell, thick with desperation and rage. "You can't hide behind locked doors forever! When the authorities realize what you've done, you'll spend the rest of your life behind bars!"

Julian ignored the noise entirely. He reached out and picked up the magnetic tape cartridge, feeling its weight in his palm. "Is the secondary playback unit functional?"

"Old school, but yes," Marcus nodded, walking over to an antiquated cathode-ray tube television set tucked into the corner of the archive. He slid the tape into the bulky VCR deck beneath the screen. "It's going to take a moment to buffer the magnetic tracks."

As the monitor flickered to life with a crackle of static and rolling black-and-white lines, the heavy oak door of the archive suddenly rattled violently. Someone was trying to pick the electronic lock from the outside using an override coder. يف

Julian turned sharply, his hand sliding inside his suit jacket to wrap around the cold, checkered grip of a concealed firearm. He stepped away from the desk, moving silently toward the heavy door just as the electronic keypad flashed from red to green with a high-pitched beep.
