Chapter 4 - Darkness Below

The sudden explosion shook the foundations of the grand mansion, sending a violent tremor through the marble floors that knocked several of the older relatives off balance. Shouts of panic erupted in the pitch-black foyer as the emergency backup generators hummed, taking three agonizing seconds to kick in before casting a sickly, amber-tinted glow over the panicked faces.

"What was that? A bomb?" someone screamed from the back of the crowd, a wealthy uncle whose designer jacket was now stained with spilled scotch.

Julian didn't flinch. While the rest of the family scrambled in confusion, stumbling over their own expensive shoes, his hand remained firmly locked around Elena’s shoulder, guiding her safely toward the reinforced alcove beneath the grand staircase. He used his own body as a barricade, shielding both the mother and the infant from the panicked surges of his relatives who were now desperately beating against the locked front doors.

"Stay down," Julian commanded in a low, steady voice that cut through the cacophony of terror.

Elena nodded frantically, tucking the white-wrapped baby deeper against her chest as she curled into the shadowed corner of the alcove. Her eyes darted toward the heavy oak doors leading to the subterranean service stairwell—the very stairs through which the saboteurs must have entered.

Across the foyer, Aunt Margaret had managed to stay upright, leaning heavily on her cane while her free hand gripped the carved banister for support. Despite her age, her eyes were sharp, scanning the shadows with a calculating malice that proved the explosion hadn't shaken her core resolve.

"You think blowing up the utility level will save you, Julian?" Margaret shouted over the din, her voice cutting through the panic with unnatural clarity. "The security protocols are hardcoded into an off-site server. Even if you trap us here, the board of directors will know you've gone rogue within the hour!"

Julian stepped out from the alcove, letting the amber light catch the sharp angles of his face and the rigid set of his shoulders. He didn't smile, but a cold, humorless light flickered in his dark eyes.

"The board of directors, Margaret?" Julian asked, his voice dripping with quiet menace as he walked slowly toward his aunt. "You mean the three handpicked puppets who rubber-stamped your illegal acquisitions for the last decade? They received their terminal notifications three minutes before I walked through those front doors."

Richard stopped hammering on the door, turning around with a face as white as paper. "Terminal... what do you mean terminal? Julian, you didn't..."

"I liquidated everything," Julian interrupted smoothly, stopping just an arm's length from his terrified cousin. "Every trust fund, every offshore account, every hidden asset tied to the Sterling name. The accounts are frozen, the holdings are seized, and the federal investigators are already reviewing the digital copies of the ledger I uploaded to the cloud the moment I crossed the state line."

A collective wave of horror washed over the family. The golden cage they had lived in their entire lives had just been permanently locked from the outside, and Julian held the only key.

"You're bankrupting us?" Richard shrieked, lunging forward with his fists clenched, forgetting his fear in a blind wave of financial desperation. "You're destroying generations of wealth for a servant and a bastard brat?"

May you like

Richard’s fist never reached Julian’s face. Before he could take a second step, the heavy iron chandelier hanging in the center of the foyer groaned, a deafening screech of stressed metal echoing overhead as the main support cable snapped.
